BOSTON - Competing in the seventh annual Terrier Tailgate, the Boston University men's soccer team fell to Boston College, 2-1, on a golden goal scored late in the first overtime on Friday night at Nickerson Field. With the season-opening loss, the Terriers drop to 0-1, while the crosstown rival Eagles are now 1-0 after avenging last year's one-goal defeat.
BU found the back of the net for the first time ever as a member of the Patriot League in the 16th minute to grab an early lead. Senior Ali Sozeri rifled the ball toward the left post after winning the battle for a deep pass from redshirt-freshman goalie Matt Gilbert. The Eagles though came back with scores in the 48th and 100th minutes, respectively, to claim the come-from-behind victory.
The teams battled back and forth with BC earning a 17-14 edge in shot attempts. Gilbert had seven saves in his first career start for the Terriers, while the Eagles' Keady Segel had two stops. The difference in the game came in corner kicks.
At 47:30, Diego Medina-Mendez curled the ball into the box, and Chris Ager beat out multiple defenders to head it past Gilbert to tie the game. With a minute remaining in the first extra session, BC earned its 10th corner of the game and used the set piece to find Ager again in the box. Zeiko Lewis fed a cross to Ager at the far post, and he sent the ball into the back of the net for the golden goal.
The Terriers had their chances to avoid the first overtime game between the two teams since 2006. Sophomore Mac McGuire blasted a shot in the 41st minute from 20 yards out on the right side, but Segel leaped up with his fingers stretched out to swat the ball over the net.
In the 73rd minute, Sozeri had a chance for a second score when he picked up a loose ball and charged toward BC's box with only Segel in the way. Pressured with a defender coming from behind, Sozeri sent the ball just wide into the rightside netting. Eleven minutes later, senior Fannar Arnarsson had an open look as both teams battled for the ball following a BU corner kick, but he hit the crossbar.
Despite scoring in back-to-back games against BC for the first time since 1999-2000, the Terriers are now 18-23-8 all-time in the annual rivalry dating back to 1967.
They will next travel to another familiar opponent in preseason No. 4 UConn on Friday, Sept. 6 with action slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. Last year, BU pulled out a 1-1 draw against the Huskies.
