CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Senior Rich Peters of the Boston University men's track & field team was named Patriot League Male Track Athlete of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Peters broke his own school record in the mile with a first-place time of 3:57.27 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday. His previous record was 3:57.83, set at the 2012 Valentine Invitational. It was the second school record that the Bristol, England, native has set this year; he bested a 27-year-old record in the 3,000m run with a time of 7:52.61 at the John Thomas Terrier Invitational.
He almost broke his second record of the day in the 1,000m run with a time of 2:22.71 to place second. His time was a mere 0.25 seconds off the school record of 2:22.46 held by Alexander Adam and David Proctor. Peters was the top collegian in that race and his mark is the best in the Patriot League this season. This is the first Patriot League weekly honor for Peters this season.
The national runner-up in the mile during the 2012 indoor season, Peters' mile time ranks third in the nation this season, just 1.41 seconds behind the NCAA leader. It is also 10.43 seconds faster than any other Patriot League mark.
BU will be back in action this Saturday when the Terriers host the Scarlet and White Invitational at the Track and Tennis Center.
