CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - The Boston University men's and women's track & field teams each had two athletes earn a Patriot League weekly honor, the conference office announced on Monday.
Sophomore Alec Olson and freshman Justin Flynn joined sophomore Michelle Sumner and freshman Felicia Sciortino as honorees. Olson and Sumner were selected as Male and Female Track Athlete of the Week while Flynn and Sciortino earned Male and Female Rookie of the Week honors. All four athletes competed at the George Mason Spring Invitational on Saturday.
Olson posted the fastest time in the 3,000m steeplechase in the Patriot League this season as he won the race with a personal-best time of 9:07.38 at the George Mason Spring Invitational. He won the race by over five seconds and has now improved upon his time in that event each weekend this season. The Excelsior, Minn., native also earned ECAC weekly honors.
Sumner shined in the 5,000m run, winning the event with a personal-best time of 16:59.52, which is the fastest in the Patriot League this season. She won the race by over 20 seconds and improved on her top 5,000m outdoor time from last year by 40 seconds. Sumner joins junior Gemma Acheampong as a two-time winner of the Patriot League Female Track Athlete of the Week award in the outdoor season and was also selected as an ECAC weekly award winner.
Flynn picked up his second straight Patriot League Male Rookie of the Week award after finishing fifth in the 200m dash with a time of 21.53 seconds and also placing eighth in the final of the 100m dash (11.85). He qualified for the final with a time of 11.78 seconds in the prelims.
Sciortino won the 3,000m steeplechase in a personal-best time of 11:05.55. It was her first collegiate victory and that mark is the third-fastest time in the Patriot League this season. This is the third time in the last four weeks that a Terrier athlete has claimed Patriot League Female Rookie of the Week honors.
BU will be back in action next week when the Terriers compete at the Holy Cross Decathlon (April 16-17) and the Sean Collier Invitational at MIT.
