Rich Peters of the Boston University men’s track & field team will compete in the 1,500m run at the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships held this weekend in Eugene, Oregon.
Peters will take the track on Thursday in the first of two semifinal heats. His race is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. ET; the top five from each heat will automatically qualify for Saturday’s final, plus the next best two times. Peters has raced in this event at the NCAA Championships in each of the last two years, finishing sixth in the 2012 final and competing in the 2013 semifinals.
The Bristol, England, native advanced to Eugene after finishing second in his quarterfinal heat at the East prelims in Jacksonville, Florida, on May 31. His fastest 1,500m time this season was at the USATF High Performance Distance Classic, where he broke his own school record with a time of 3:38.83. Peters is the Patriot League champion in that event thanks to a time of 3:44.68 at the conference championships, which was his 2014 outdoor debut.
If Peters earns a USTFCCCA All-America selection this weekend, it will mark the second time in his career that he was a two-time All-American in the same calendar year. He accomplished that feat in 2012 when he was a first-team honoree in both the indoor (mile) and outdoor (1,500m) seasons. Peters finished fourth in the mile at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships in March.
Saturday’s championship heat is scheduled for 5:18 p.m. ET.
