BOSTON - Entering a week nationally ranked by the NSCAA for the first time since 2009, the No. 23 Boston University men's soccer team will put its two-game winning streak on the line at Siena Wednesday afternoon with action slated to begin at 4 p.m.
Guided by 30th-year head coach Neil Roberts, the Terriers (2-0-0) have used an impressive defensive effort to open a season with back-to-back shutouts for the second time in program history and first since 1978. Named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, senior Kelvin Madzongwe anchored a backline that held Fordham and Iona to a combined three shots on goal in 190 minutes of action.
On the offensive end, junior Lucas McBride scored a goal with one second left in the first overtime of the 1-0 win over Fordham with assistance from senior Dominique Badji and sophomore Richie Robinson. In the second contest after a 15-minute rain delay in the middle of the second half, reigning PL Rookie of the Week Bjarki Benediktsson placed a free kick toward the front of the box for sophomore Felix De Bona to head in for the 1-0 victory.
In total, the Terriers outshot their opponents by a combined 30-shot margin, 47-17, with Badji tallying 14 of them. They will next try to open a year with three straight wins for the first time since 1998 against a Siena squad that stands at 1-0-0 following a 1-0 home victory over La Salle.
The Saints owned a 13-9 advantage in shot attempts but did not require a single save for the clean sheet. Tom Allen came off the bench in the 40th minute to tap in a cross from Paolino Curto.
The two teams are meeting for the second time in program history and first since 1988 when BU claimed a 3-0 victory. Coincidentally, both programs were selected sixth in their respective conference preseason poll.
After the game, BU will return to campus and host regional rival Brown on Sunday (Sept. 7) at 7 p.m. as part of the eighth annual Terrier Tailgate festivities.
