BOSTON - Before hosting Army this upcoming weekend, the Boston University softball team will hit the road for two midweek road games, starting with UMass Lowell on Tuesday (April 7) at 4 p.m.
After facing the River Hawks (10-17), the Terriers (7-20) will then make the quick trip over to crosstown rival Boston College (16-15) on Wednesday (April 8) at 4 p.m.
TERRIER TIDBITS
· BU went 2-0 last season against UML, winning 9-1 on the road and 4-3 at home ... The Terriers though went 0-2 against the Eagles, falling 8-0 on the road and 3-0 at home ... BU last won at BC in 2013.
· Due to the record snow fall in Boston this past winter, BU is one of 20 teams out of 295 to have yet to host a home game ... Colgate is the other Patriot League squad.
· The Terriers went 1-4 last week with a doubleheader loss at Lehigh and 1-2 performance at Holy Cross ... BU's lone win was a 9-1 (5 inn.) victory against the Crusaders.
· BU batted .283 during the five games with sophomore Gabi Martinez hitting a team-high .583 ... Went 17-of-18 in stolen base attempts.
· Sophomore Moriah Connolly batted .500, stole five bases and tied Martinez with seven hits ... Also tied freshman Emma Wong and senior Emily Felbaum with three RBIs apiece last week.
· Defense was a problem for BU last week, as the Terriers committed 12 errors for a .906 fielding percentage.
· The pitching staff finished with a 5.37 ERA ... Sophomore Makinna Akers (3-5, 4.29 ERA) appeared in three of the games, posting a 2.88 ERA with opponents batting .324 ... Akers also earned 10 strikeouts in 17.0 innings ... Making her first appearance last week since Feb. 15 due to injury, junior Melanie Russell (1-4, 10.50 ERA) collected her first win of the year by limiting Holy Cross to one run ... She tallied eight strikeouts in 8.2 innings of work in three appearances.
SCOUTING THE ROAD OPPONENTS
UMass Lowell, 10-17 (Tuesday, 4 p.m.)
· The River Hawks have played their last five games at home, losing four straight ... First posted a doubleheader split against Bryant and then fell to UMBC in three games by a combined score of 28-6.
· UML faced three Patriot League teams at the Michele Smith Spring Tournament ... Fell to Colgate (11-7, 8 inn.) and Lehigh (6-5) ... Defeated Army, 8-7.
· Own key wins over Chattanooga, Middle Tennessee and Columbia.
· UML is batting .242 and has been outscored 157-102 ... Ariana Darcy is the lone River Hawk above .297 at .303 with two homers, a team-high 15 runs scored and nine stolen bases ... Vanessa Cooper (.255) and Emilia Davies (.240) both own a team-high 13 RBIs.
· Three pitchers have made at least 12 appearances and own a 4.89 ERA ... Erica Armenti (3-9, 3.70 ERA) is holding opponents to a .284 batting average with 32 strikeouts in 77.2 innings ... Marielle Handley (4-7, 5.58 ERA) has allowed 13 homers and has struck out 46 batters in 69.0 innings ... Opponents are hitting .338 against Handley.
Boston College, 16-15 (Wednesday, 4 p.m.)
· The Eagles have "hosted" just one game so far, a 7-6 win against Bryant at Plymouth H.S. due to their field recovering from the snow.
· BC enters the week on a two-game losing streak after going 1-3 at Virginia ... Will face Harvard in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
· The Eagles own a three-game sweep against George Mason with key wins over Bucknell, Coastal Carolina and Binghamton.
· Offense is hitting .254 and has outscored opponents 136-119 ... Taylor Coroneos is batting a team-high .321 with 11 RBIs ... Jordan Chimento (.262) owns a team-high 20 RBIs behind seven doubles and two homers ... Tatiana Cortez (.250) is close behind at 19 RBIs with 20 walks and three homers ... Megan Cooley (.296) has scored 24 runs and is 15-of-16 in stolen base attempts.
· Four-person pitching staff owns a 3.47 ERA ... Allyson Frei (12-10, 3.29 ERA) has 138 strikeouts and 83 walks in 125.2 innings ... Jordan Weed (3-1, 4.97 ERA) has tallied 22 strikeouts in 49.1 innings.
UP NEXT
· The Terriers will host Army in a three-game series over the weekend ... They will open the Saturday doubleheader at 12 p.m. and then meet Sunday at 12 p.m.
