SKILLMAN, N.J. - After sweeping both Patriot League Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, Boston University women's tennis junior Johanna Hyoty has been named the recipient of the ITA/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship & Leadership Award for the northeast region.
Started in 1982, the award recognizes those who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. A total of 12 players were honored across the nation.
Guiding the Terriers to a second consecutive PL title and NCAA berth, the Tampere, Finland native compiled a 19-11 singles record this season that included a three-set win over Boston College's then-No. 61 ranked Jessica Wacnik, which helped Hyoty earn a ranking of No. 122 for two weeks. Other highlight wins came against 2015 MAC champion Miami Ohio's top player and a 2015 All-CUSA First Team honoree from then-No. 70 North Texas.
Besides repeating as the PL Player of the Year, she also received the conference's first Doubles Team of the Year award with sophomore Barbara Rodriguez. The duo went 8-5 at the No. 1 slot, highlighted by a perfect 6-0 record against conference opponents.
In the classroom, Hyoty owns a 3.60 GPA while majoring in business administration and management. She's a two-time PL All-Academic Team honoree and is on track to receive her second ITA Scholar-Athlete honor.
Tuesday's announcement marks the first time since 2011 that head coach Lesley Sheehan's program has been honored. Stefanie Nunic ('12) was named the Northeast's Top Player to Watch, Vanessa Steiner ('11) received the Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship.
