BOSTON - A successful header by junior Felix De Bona and four saves by junior Matt Gilbert helped the Boston University men's soccer team claim a 1-0 victory over Siena on Tuesday night at Nickerson Field. With their first shutout win of the season, the Terriers improve to 2-1-0, while the Saints fall to 0-2-2 in their first-ever trip to BU.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore David Amirani fed classmate Anthony Viteri, who sent a hard cross into Siena's box for De Bona to head in past the diving Ryan Vyskocil. Siena tried to respond with 11 second-half shot attempts and two corners but was unable to break down the Terriers' backline.
Looking for their second consecutive win over BU, the Saints withstood two early corners and had the first quality look at 16:40 when David Itoafa curled a ball into the hands of the perfectly-placed Gilbert. One minute later, freshman Adam Wright tried to convert off the Terriers' third corner with a hard liner on the ground, but Ryan Vyskocil was able to contain the ball in traffic.
BU maintained possession for most of the first half and went into the locker room with a 6-4 advantage in shot attempts. The Terriers required little time in the second to break the scoreless deadlock, as Viteri and Amirani earned their first assists of the season to give BU the 1-0 advantage.
With his third goal in three games, De Bona already owns seven points after tallying nine total as a sophomore. Reigning MAAC Offensive Player of the Week Junior Rosero quickly tried to find the equalizer but his following two attempts went high and into a defender, respectively.
During the 54th minute in a counter attack, Alexander Tejera pushed the ball down the right side toward the BU. Gilbert came out quickly to force a quick shot and earned the save. Tejera grabbed the rebound but sent it well wide while being pressured by other Terriers.
The Saints had two more attempts in the 89th minute to finish ahead in shots, 15-12, while BU had a 4-2 lead in corner kicks.
Having already beaten defending Atlantic 10 champion Fordham on the road, BU will next visit in-state non-conference foe UMass on Sunday (Sept. 13) with action set for 1 p.m.
