EAST HARTFORD, Conn. and ALLSTON, Mass. - Competing in a pair of matches over the weekend, the Boston University men's tennis team claimed a 5-2 win against Sacred Heart before dropping a 7-0 decision at No. 33 Harvard.
The Terriers (1-2) first claimed their sixth straight victory in the annual series against the Pioneers (2-2) on Saturday by sweeping through doubles in a hard-fought battle by a combined score of 20-15. They then captured four of the six singles points for the team win.
Juniors Jay Leelavanich and Jake De Vries edged SHU in the top doubles slot, 7-6, and carried the momentum from the exciting finish to easy wins at No. 3 (6-0, 6-3) and No. 4 (6-2, 6-2) singles, respectively.
Senior William Kwok teamed with freshman Jeff Chan for another tightly-contested win at line 2 in doubles, 7-5. Kwok then rolled past the Pioneers' top singles player, Brian Power, in a 6-3, 6-3 decision. Chan added the other singles point at No. 5, 6-4, 6-4.
Senior Stefan Lemire and junior Miguel Cepeda completed the doubles sweep at No. 3, 6-4. The Pioneers though avoided a shutout with singles wins at No. 2 (7-6, 6-3) and No. 6 (7-5, 6-4) against junior Lucas Bombonatti and freshman Daniel Chopovsky, respectively.
After collecting its first win, BU visited the 33rd-ranked Crimson on Sunday afternoon. Leelavanich won the lone set for the Terriers in singles action, as he rallied from a set down to force a super tiebreaker in a tough 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 loss at No. 3.
Earlier in the contest, he teamed with De Vries against Harvard's 39th-ranked duo Brian Yeung/Andy Zhou in a 6-3 loss. Kwok battled Zhou to the end in the top singles slot but fell in the first-set tiebreaker and could not overcome being broken in the second for a 7-6, 6-4 loss.
Following the split, BU will host Fairfield in its home opener on Sunday (Feb. 7) at 10 a.m.
