BOSTON - Competing in its home opener, the Boston University men's tennis team claimed a 5-2 victory over Fairfield on Sunday morning at the BU Track & Tennis Center.
After sweeping in doubles for a hard-fought point, the Terriers (2-2) claimed four of six singles points to snap a five-match losing streak to the Stags (2-1) with the last victory occurring in 2007.
Senior Stefan Lemire and junior Miguel Cepeda led off the contest at No. 2 doubles with a late break and 7-5 win over Fairfield. The Terriers then pulled out the doubles point with identical 7-6 victories at lines 1 and 3, respectively.
The score was tied at 2-2 after junior Lucas Bombonatti won in straight sets (6-3, 7-6) at No. 4 singles and the Stags earned victories at line 1 and 2. Fairfield's Jeffrey Rodgers seemed to be on his way for an easy straight sets victory at line 3 (6-4, 4-0), but junior Mario Sandoval reeled off 12 games for the thrilling come-from-behind 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory.
Junior Jake De Vries teamed with classmate Jay Leelavanich for a No. 1 doubles win and carried the momentum to No. 6 singles in a 6-0, 6-4 victory. Freshman Satyajit Simhadri earlier won in the final doubles (#3) match with Sandoval and then triumphed in the final singles (#5) contest, 6-2, 5-7, 11-9.
The Terriers will next remain at home on Wednesday (Feb. 10) and host UConn with doubles slated to begin at 4 p.m.
