The Boston University women's ice hockey team will face No. 1 Boston College on Sunday in the 14th annual Hockey East title game at Lawler Rink on the campus of Merrimack College. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
The game will be broadcast live nationally on American Sports Network. It will also be shown locally on NESN on tape delay at 5 p.m.
BU (23-13-2) advanced to Sunday's title game with a 4-3 victory over No. 6 Northeastern on Saturday. Junior Alexis Crossley collected three points, including the shorthanded game-winner in the third period. Sophomore Erin O'Neil made a career-high 54 saves for the Terriers while sophomore Victoria Bach (1g, 1a) had two points and senior captain Kayla Tutino also lit the lamp.
This is the third straight time that BU and BC (37-0-0) have met in the league title game. The Terriers have won four straight championships and five overall while BC was the last team other than BU to win the Bertagna Trophy, doing so in 2011. BU is 5-0 in championship games and 4-1 all-time against the Eagles in the league tournament
While BC is in the midst of a perfect season, the Terriers have come closest to knocking off the Eagles, suffering a 4-3 overtime setback at Conte Forum on Nov. 10. BU also had a second-period lead against the Eagles at Walter Brown Arena on Jan. 9 before BC came back to earn another 4-3 victory.
Two sophomores have paced the Terrier offense this season, as Bach and classmate Rebecca Leslie have combined for 97 points this season. Leslie leads the team with 49 points and 34 assists while Bach has tallied a team-best 22 goals. Five different Terriers have tallied 30 or more points, with Tutino reaching that mark on Saturday. Seniors Sarah Lefort (13g, 22a) and Rebecca Russo (15g, 23a) have 35 and 38 points, respectively.
O'Neil was perhaps the Terriers' best player on Saturday and has played well throughout the postseason. She enters Sunday with a 1.76 goals-against average and a .952 save percentage through four playoff games, including a shutout in game one of the league quarterfinals.
BC improved to a perfect 37-0-0 with a 4-2 win over UConn on Saturday. The Eagles scored twice in the third period to break a 2-2 tie. Senior Alex Carpenter, a top-three finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award, leads the nation with 40 assists and is second in the NCAA in goals (39) and points (79).
Classmate Haley Skarupa is third in the NCAA in both assists (38) and points (69) while Hockey East Rookie of the Year Makenna Newkirk has 47 points (21g, 26a) second among NCAA rookies. Sophomore goaltender Katie Burt is 32-0-0 with a .943 save percentage and a 1.19 goals-against average.
If the Terriers win on Sunday, they will advance to the NCAA Tournament for a seventh straight season. The selection show will air on NCAA.com at 9 p.m.
