BOSTON - Highlighted by its first-ever contest on an ESPN network and nine home games, the Boston University men's soccer team and 32nd-year head coach Neil Roberts have announced the 2016 schedule. The Terriers are coming off their 15th overall NCAA appearance and will be trying to claim a third-straight 12+ win record, a feat last accomplished in 1989-91.
In addition to the 16 regular-season contests, the Terriers will have two scrimmages, including a home date with Rhode Island on Saturday, Aug. 20, before officially opening the program's 68th season on Sunday, Aug. 28, at crosstown rival Boston College. The Eagles will mark the first of three opponents to be coming off an NCAA berth and one of nine to post a top-100 RPI last season.
After battling BC, BU will open the home slate against two more in-state foes, UMass (Sept. 10) and Northeastern (Sept. 13). The Terriers will then travel to Princeton for an evening matchup on Friday, Sept. 16 contest to be televised by ESPNU. In their last national television appearance on the previously named Fox Soccer Channel (now FXX), they posted a 2-0 win at UMBC back in 2010.
The final three non-conference games will also be against Ivy League opponents with BU hosting both Brown (Sept. 20) and Dartmouth (Oct. 18). The Terriers will visit Harvard on Sept. 27 after dispatching the Crimson, 3-0, last season in what proved to be a critical game that helped propel BU to an NCAA at-large berth, as the Crimson finished with an RPI ranking of 40.
Having recorded a combined 12-1-5 record over the last two years in the Patriot League, the Terriers will open their fourth year in the conference at Bucknell on Sept. 24. They will have three more PL road trips with visits to Loyola Maryland (Oct. 8), defending PL champion Lehigh (Oct. 22) and Holy Cross (Oct. 26).
The conference home schedule will kick off against 2015 PL runner-up American on Oct. 1 and will be followed by Colgate (Oct. 5) and Lafayette (Oct. 15). BU will conclude the regular season at home against Army West Point (Oct. 29) and Navy (Nov. 4).
Only six of the 10 PL members will advance to the conference tournament with the top two seeds receiving a first-round bye. The No. 3 and 4 seeds will host a home game on Nov. 8, and the regular-season champion will host the final two rounds on Nov. 11-13.
