BUFFALO, N.Y. - Paced by sophomore Paul Luevano's fifth-place finish, the Boston University men's cross country team placed sixth at the NCAA Northeast Regional on Friday afternoon at Audubon Golf Course.
Luevano finished with a time of 32:04.3, running at the front of the field for the majority of the 10K race. He has unofficially earned one of four at-large selections to the NCAA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 18, in Louisville, Kentucky.
"Paul was the first guy out last year as a freshman, so I think he came in with a little extra chip on his shoulder to show he belonged at NCAA Championships," head coach Paul Spangler said. "He put himself in a position to have success."
Once the field is officially announced for Louisville, Luevano will be the first Terrier male to qualify for that event since Rich Peters in 2012. Luevano's fifth-place finish is also the highest for a Terrier male since Peters was ninth in 2012.
As a team, the Terriers posted their best performance at the NCAA Northeast Regional since they were seventh in 2010. BU totaled 228 points, just 10 points back of third-place Army West Point (218). Syracuse (28) and Iona (48) were first and second, respectively, while Stony Brook (222) and Columbia (223) edged the Terriers for a spot in the top five.
"This was maybe our best race of the year as a team," Spangler said. "It's kind of hard to swallow when you're 10 points out of third, but I'm proud of all the guys. They did a really good job."
Junior Alexander Seal finished 19th with a time of 32:30.8, his best finish at an NCAA event. Seal and Luevano are expected to be named to the USTFCCCA All-Region Team thanks to their top-25 performances. This is the third year in a row that a Terrier has earned All-Region status.
"This was probably Alex's best race of the year," Spangler said. "For somebody who is a miler to come into a 10K race and mix it up with the best runners in the country will bode well for him once track season starts."
Junior Johnny Kemps (33:28.7) was 58th, followed by senior Cullin Burdett (33:35.0) in 66th. Sophomore Zachary Prescott, who Spangler said "really stepped up for us in the fifth spot," posted a time of 33:48.6 to finish 80th and help secure sixth place for the Terriers. Sophomore Greg Pelose finished 101st with a time of 34:09.0, while freshman Scotti Hamilton posted a time of 36:27.7 in his NCAA debut.
"Cullin is our only senior," Spangler said. "He's been a great leader on this team. I'm really proud of the work he's done not only in terms of what he's produced on the course but in terms of what he's done as a leader."
While Luevano has one more cross country race on his docket, the rest of the Terriers will prepare for the indoor track & field season that begins on Dec. 2 with the BU Season Opener at the Track and Tennis Center.
