Terriers Coast to 83-48 Win over Wheaton College

BOSTON – Featuring three rookies in double figures, the Boston University men's basketball team cruised to an 83-48 win over Wheaton College on Sunday evening at Case Gym.

- BU jumped out to a 13-2 lead over the first five minutes with senior Nick Havener hitting a pair of layups and classmates Will Goff and Eric Johnson draining back-to-back 3-pointers.
- Wheaton pulled within eight (15-7) at 9:47 on one of its five 3-pointers, but the Terriers responded with a 20-5 run capped by back-to-back treys from freshmen Andrew Petcash and Javante McCoy.
- The Lyons briefly cut the deficit under 20 points (40-21) at 2:11 on two free throws but would never get any closer.
- Sophomore Max Mahoney's layup at 14:14 in the second half gave BU its largest lead of the game (63-26), and Petcash lated matched it at 5:44 (77-40) on his third 3-pointer.
- Besides posting season highs in points (83) and assists (22), the Terriers finished with at least 50 rebounds (52 total) for the first time since hauling in 55 against Lafayette on Jan. 9, 2016.
- BU also held its first opponent under 29 percent shooting (Wheaton – 26.4 FG%) for the first time since Navy shot 20.8 percent on Jan. 7, 2014.
- Petcash (15 pts.) and freshman Sukhmail Mathon (13 pts.) both recorded season highs to combine for 28 points and to help the Terriers increase the number of men to reach double figures this season to 11 players.
- Mathon also tallied a personal-best eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks, while McCoy had 12 points and three assists.
- Wheaton's Liam Bruno, Duaka Ekwensi and Ryan Fogarty entered the contest averaging a combined 49.3 ppg but were held to 15 points total on 4-of-24 shooting, while David Carbonello went 4-of-8 en route to 11 points.
- The matchup marked the first meeting between the two schools and BU's first-ever against the New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), which formed in 1985.
- The Terriers will open a four-game road trip at former America East rival New Hampshire on Wednesday (Nov. 29) with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
- They lead the all-time series against UNH, 98-39, after first meeting in 1908-09.
- BU has won the last the two meetings at home against the Wildcats in 2016 (73-69) and 2015 (78-74) after dropping a 75-68 road decision in 2014.
