BOSTON - The Boston University men's and women's track & field teams continued their indoor season by hosting the Last Chance Meet at the TTC on Sunday, the final day of the season for athletes to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Needing to finish with one of the top 16 results in the country in a given event to qualify for nationals, competitors entered the day with hopes of making the final cut.
Senior Ethan Homan competed in the 800m and finished with a time of 1:50.20, good for first place overall in field that included several professional runners, but short of the NCAA qualifying time of 1:47.76.
Matti Groll competed in the 1-mile and finished with a time of 4:03.36 (3.58.57 needed to qualify) while freshman Johnny Kemps finished with a time of 4:05.93, a new personal best and good for 16th place in a very talented field of 42 runners that included 11 sub 4-minute miles.
Freshman Paul Luevano competed in the 5000 meter run for the first time and finished 11th (first among collegians), with an excellent time of 14:08.57.
Competing in sprints, junior Cameron Nurse ran the 200m dash in a time of 21.82, good for seventh place.
On the women's side, junior Gabrielle DiRenzo competed in the 1-mile and set a new personal best with a time of 5:10.46, good for 12th place.
Freshman Leah Fowlkes ran the 200m dash and finished with a time of 24.65, a new personal best and good for eighth place while junior Maya Marshall competed in the 60m dash and finished with a time of 7.93 and in fifth place.
In addition to several athletes trying to qualify for nationals, the BU Last Chance Meet was also highlighted by a number of amateur and professional stars in the track & field world competing at the TTC.
In a thrilling performance, 15 time NCAA Champion Edward Cheserek of Oregon raced in the men's 1-mile and broke the collegiate record with an amazing time of 3:52.01. Cheserek finished first in a field that saw the top 11 competitors finish with sub 4-minute miles.
Also competing on Sunday was Molly Huddle, the women's American record holder in the outdoor 5k who ran for team Saucony. Huddle ran the 5000m run in 15:01.64 and finished in first place.
After Sunday's competition, junior Cameron Williams and senior David Oluwadara, will compete at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, which begin on March 10 at College Station, Tex. Williams' 200m time of 20.57 set at last week's Patriot League Championship remains the fifth-fastest 200 meter time in the nation this season while Oluwadara's triple jump of 16.07m, (52' 8.75") is the 10th best in the nation this year.
BU will host the final event of the season at the Track and Tennis Center next weekend with the IC4A Championships on March 4 and 5.
