LOS ANGELES – Concluding its spring break trip to California, the defending Patriot League champion Boston University softball team will face arguably its stiffest test of the season at the three-day Long Beach State/Cal State Fullerton Tournament, which will feature four opponents coming off NCAA appearances.
The Terriers will first have a rematch against Eastern Michigan on Thursday at 12 p.m. ET and then face host Long Beach State at 2:30 p.m. The competition moves over to Cal State Fullerton on Friday (March 10) for contests against San Diego State (2:30 p.m. ET) and the host Titans (7:30 p.m.). BU will then battle No. 10 UCLA (12 p.m.) on Saturday at LBSU before returning to Cal State Fullerton later in the evening at 8:30 p.m. ET for a rematch with the Titans.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU is coming off Tuesday's doubleheader split at Loyola Marymount in which the Terriers bounced back from a 6-2 loss with a 3-1 win over the Lions.
- The Terriers are batting .280 while holding opponents to .273 ... Coincidentally BU and opponents have an identical 17 doubles, two triples and eight homers apiece.
- Former Patriot League Player of the Week Gabi Martinez leads BU at .367 with three homers and 10 RBIs, while reigning PL Player of the Week Moriah Connolly is hitting .353 with 14 runs scored and 12 stolen bases on 13 attempts.
- Sophomore Alex Heinen (.309) owns a team-high four homers after tallying three all of last season with 11 RBIs ... She is joined by junior Kaitlin Sahlinger (.302) in batting over .300.
- Freshman Kali Magane (4-4, 2.33 ERA) recorded her third complete-game performance of the season in the win over LMU ... Senior Makinna Akers (3-2, 3.21 ERA) owns the Terriers' other three wins by holding opponents to .250 average.
- Junior Sydni Overly (0-2, 5.76 ERA) owns 25 strikeouts in 20.2 innings.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Eastern Michigan (Thursday, 12 p.m. ET at LBSU)
- The Eagles are 6-6 after spending two weeks in Florida with a 7-6 come-from-behind win over BU and other key wins against Stony Brook (4-3) and Brown (4-0) ... They also have one-run losses to Georgetown (9-8), Quinnipiac (4-3) and Villanova (1-0).
- They are batting .293 as a team and are holding opponents to .292.
- Michelle Kriegshauser leads the way at .439 with four doubles, two homers and 13 RBIs, while Taylor Wagner (.438 avg) and Lucy Lopez (.423 avg) have combined for seven RBIs.
- Trisha Trujillo (4-2, 3.30 ERA), Nicolle Miranda (0-1, 7.89 ERA) and Abbie Minsker (2-0, 2.18 ERA) have combined for 72 of the 81 innings pitched.
Long Beach State (Thursday, 2:30 p.m. ET at LBSU)
- LBSU is 6-10-1 so far after going 32-21 last season and posting a 1-2 record at the Eugene NCAA Regional.
- The 49ers own wins over Notre Dame (4-3), San Diego State and Oregon State with tough losses to Oklahoma State and South Carolina.
- Owner of five College World Series appearances, they are batting .241 and holding opponents to .308 while recording just three stolen bases in 17 games.
- Nichole Fry (.348 avg.) owns five doubles, two triples and a homer, while Aniesa Maulupe (.244 avg) has a team-high 11 RBIs.
- Christina Claremont (4-4, 3.29 ERA) has pitched three complete games in 10 starts, while Jessica Flores (0-3, 7.88 ERA) owns the other two complete-game performances.
- Teams are meeting for the first time in program history.
San Diego State (Friday, 2:30 p.m. ET at CSUF)
- Owner of a 3-2 win against then-No. 17 Utah, the Aztecs are 12-7 so far this season with an earlier 8-0 run-rule victory over the Terriers and are riding a four-game win streak.
- SDSU is batting an impressive .347 and is holding opponents to .311 with both sides tabulating 13 homers apiece.
- Molly Sturdivant is batting an impressive .444 with seven doubles, two homers and 12 RBIs ... Sydnee Cable (.359) and Jenavee Peres (.393) have combined for 43 RBIs in just 19 games.
- All four SDSU pitchers have gone the distance once with three recording a save ... Marissa Moreno (6-2, 2.62 ERA), Erica Romero (3-1, 3.25 ERA) and Julie McDonald (1-2, 3.82 ERA) have all made at least 10 appearances this season.
Cal State Fullerton (Friday, 7:30 p.m. ET and Saturday, 8:30 p.m. ET at CSUF)
- The defending Big West champion Titans are 9-11 after going 45-16 last season and posting a 2-2 record at the Los Angeles NCAA Regional with two wins over Fresno State and two losses to UCLA.
- This year, CSUF owns key wins against Baylor Utah, Houston, Mississipi State and Texas Tech with tough losses to Michigan (2-0) and UCLA (2-0).
- The Titans are batting .265 so far and are holding opponents to .246.
- Lexi Gonzalez is batting a team-high .375 with six doubles, three homers and 13 RBIs, while both Delynn Rippy (.368) and Shianne Brannan (.298) both own 10 RBIs apiece.
- Kelsey Kessler (6-4, 1.83 ERA) has a stellar 69 strikeouts in 65.0 innings pitched with five complete games ... Sydney Golden (0-4, 3.87 ERA0 and Trish Parks (2-3, 4.45 ERA) have combined for 10 starts.
#10 UCLA (Saturday, 12 p.m. ET at LBSU)
- The Bruins are off to a strong start this year at 16-5 after reaching the College World Series last year and finishing with a 40-16-1 record.
- They own impressive wins over Notre Dame, Kentucky, Michigan, LSU and Georgia.
- UCLA is batting .332 and holding opponents to a miniscule .225 with the help of six shutouts and a 29-8 advantage in home runs.
- Kyle Perez is batting a team-high .449 with nine doubles, while Delaney Spaulding (.439) owns seven homers and 15 RBIs ... Madeline Jelenicki (.262) leads the Bruins with 22 RBIs while recording six homers.
- Rachel Garcia (7-3, 1.85 ERA) owns 64 strikeouts in 53.0 innings, while Johanna Grauer (5-1, 2.30) has 53 strikeouts in 54.2 innings ... Selina Ta'amilo (4-0, 1.77 ERA) has pitched two complete games as well.
