BOSTON - No. 6 Boston University men's rowing team continued its duel season this Saturday, falling to No. 8 Dartmouth in a very close race for the Bill Cup on the Charles River. BU won three out of four races on the day, winning the 2V, 3V and 4V races, but lost the V8 race to the Big Green for the Bill Cup.
The loss snapped a 12-race winning streak for the Terriers over Dartmouth dating back to 2006 and also ended BU's overall cup race winning streak of seven that dated back to March 26, 2016.
"It was tight racing in all boats this morning," Boston University men's rowing head coach Thomas Bohrer said after the race. "We knew Dartmouth was going to be fast and in the 1V we got edged out by about 3 feet. Dartmouth raced hard and deserves the win. We were able to secure wins in the 2V, 3V, and 4V which we are happy about. They were hard wins, and we have a lot to work on this week to prepare for Syracuse and Columbia."

HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first race of the day, the varsity eight race for the Bill Cup, the Terriers jumped out to a quick lead but Dartmouth soon pulled even over the first 500 meters of the race. Dartmouth pulled ahead of BU and extended its lead to four seats as the boats approached the MIT bridge. The BU 1V, coxed by Mackenzie Hart and stroked by Max Ponsen, made a big move with 500 meters to go and caught Dartmouth as the two boats approached the line even. The Big Green held on by a bow ball at the line to win the Bill Cup for the first time since 2006. Dartmouth finished with a time of 5:57.16 while BU finished in 5:57.72.
- In the second varsity eight race, after an even start, BU held a three-seat lead at the half way point of the race. Coxed by Justin Goucher and stroked by Jacob Barker, the 2V extended its lead to half a length over the final 500 meters and didn't look back. Despite Dartmouth's effort to close the gap, the 2V maintained its lead and won the race with a time of 6:07.43, ahead of Dartmouth's time of 6:10.07.
- In the third varsity eight race, BU fell behind Dartmouth by three seats over the first 500 meters and trailed by the same margin at the MIT bridge. But BU made a move and pulled even entering the final 500 meters. Coxed by Jeanne Garner and stroked by Peter Roberts, the BU 3V pulled away from Dartmouth over the final 500 meters, leading by as much as six seats. Dartmouth made a late move to cut into the BU lead but it was not enough as BU finished with a time of 6:07.43, better than Dartmouth's time of 6:10.07.
- BU's 4V made it three out of four wins for the Terriers in the final race of the day. Coxed by Sean Dooling and stroked by Saed Salah, the fourth varsity won by open water to end the day on a winning note. BU crossed the line in 6:36.02 while Dartmouth came in at 6:40.85.
- The Terriers hadn't lost a cup race since it fell to Brown in March 26, 2016 for the Michalson Cup, a loss they avenged earlier this season.
- The Terriers will next race against Columbia (Lusins Cup) and Syracuse (Conlan Cup) on April 22 in Syracuse, N.Y.
