Boston University men's rowing will conclude their spring duel season this Saturday when they take on the Wisconsin Badgers for the Jablonic Cup on the Charles River. Racing against Wisconsin is set to begin with the 3V/4V race at 7:30 a.m. and will conclude at 8:50 a.m. when the varsity eight races for the Jablonic Cup. In Addition, the BU 5V 4+ will take on Harvard at 7:10 a.m. and the 4V8 will also race the Crimson at 10 a.m.
The No. 8 ranked Terriers will be seeking their fifth-straight Jablonic Cup victory over the No. 13 Badgers, with BU's win streak dating back to 2013.
"The Jablonic Cup is our last dual race before Eastern Sprints so it is an important race," said men's rowing head coach Thomas Bohrer. "BU vs. Wisconsin has turned into a big rivalry over the last several years with many of our races being separated by a second or less."
The Jablonic Cup is named in honor of the longest serving coach in the history of the Wisconsin men's rowing program, Randy "Jabo" Jablonic, who was head coach of the Badgers from 1969 to 1997. He was also an oarsman at Wisconsin, graduating in 1960.
Last year, the Terriers 1V defeated Wisconsin on its way to sweeping the Badgers in three races. Overall, Wisconsin has won 28 of the 35 races between the schools going back to 1948, with the Terriers victorious the last four times the teams have met.
This Saturday's will be the final competition at DeWolfe Boathouse for eight seniors, who will be honored after the race.
"The Class of 2017 is a terrific group of young men that have worked hard both on and off the water and have represented our program with the highest level of integrity in their four years at BU," added Bohrer. "They will leave a positive impression on their teammates and will be missed."
After racing Saturday, BU will next head to Worcester, Mass. for the Eastern Sprints on May 14. The Terriers will then prepare for the IRA National Championship Regatta June 2-4 in Sacramento, Calif.
