LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior co-captain
Allie Doggett scored early in the second overtime to give the No. 24 Boston University field hockey team a 3-2 victory at Bucknell on Saturday at Graham Field.
BU never trailed in the contest, holding leads of 1-0 and 2-1 thanks to goals from sophomore
Kathryn Scheerer and freshman
Rebecca Janes. The Bison sent the game to overtime with a goal off a corner in the 63rd minute.
The Terriers remain perfect in Patriot League play at 4-0 and improve to 8-5 overall while the Bison fall to 7-6 on the year with a 2-2 conference mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first three shots of the game all produced goals, beginning with a blast just inside the right side of the circle by Sheerer at 2:54 for her first goal of the season.
- Bucknell got an equalizer at 14:37 when Claire Lesher took a pass from Emily Doyle and scored from five yards out.
- BU didn't get a shot off on its first penalty corner of the game but it regained the lead off its second.
- The corner play saw senior Ally Hammel find sophomore Maggie New outside the right post, where New quickly redirected the ball to Janes, who converted from right in front of the cage for her second tally of the year.
- That 2-1 lead would hold for over 45 minutes but the Terriers would have gone up 3-1 with 12:50 to play if it weren't for an impressive defensive save by Sam Chanzit, who raced to the right post to knock away a shot by Ailsa Connolly.
- Bucknell's Lexi Quick took a direct insert off a corner and drilled a shot between BU goalkeeper Kathleen Keegan's pads with 7:38 left in regulation to force overtime.
- After a scoreless first overtime in which the Terriers couldn't capitalize off two corner, Doggett ended the game early in the second extra session.
- The senior dribbled in along the right end line and, after having her initial attempt broken up by a defender, quickly spotted the ball and elevated it over the stick of Bucknell goalkeeper Olivia Harris and into the cage off a bounce at the right post at 81:10.
GAME NOTES
- The Terriers are now 3-0 in overtime this season with all three coming on the road.
- Keegan recorded three saves – all after halftime – for the Terriers while Olivia Harris made seven on the other end, including four in the second half alone to keep the Bison in the game.
- BU held a 15-7 advantage in shots and earned seven corners while giving up only three.
- New's assist on Janes' goal was her first point of the season.
UP NEXT
- BU will start a three-game homestand next Saturday (Oct. 20) when it hosts Lehigh at noon.
- The Terriers need to win just one of their two remaining Patriot League contests to secure the top seed and home field for the conference tournament.
