CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Returning four starters from last year's Patriot League semifinal appearance, the Boston University men's basketball team received two first-place votes in the conference's preseason poll, the league office announced Wednesday morning.
The Terriers finished fourth overall in the poll with 121 points after eliminating preseason favorite Lehigh in the PL quarterfinals on the road last March. The Mountain Hawks collected seven first-place votes and 145 total points to finish ahead of defending champion Bucknell (140 points, eight first-place votes). PL runner-up Colgate took the third spot with 130 points and the other three first-place votes. Holy Cross (109), Army West Point (71), American (64), Navy (52), Lafayette (46) and Loyola Maryland (22) rounded out the list. Voting for the poll was conducted by PL head coaches and sports information directors, who were not permitted to vote for their own team.
Entering his eighth season at the helm, head coach Joe Jones has a young squad this year with only one senior in guard Kamali Chambers. 2018 All-PL forward Max Mahoney is the top returning after averaging a team-high 12.9 points with 4.8 rebounds per game and shooting a school-record 60.1 percent from the field. Junior forward Tyler Scanlon also averaged double figures (10.5 ppg) and led the team in rebounds (5.5 rpg), assists (3.0 apg) and steals (44).
Scanlon is a former All-PL Rookie Team honoree alongside sophomore wingman Walter Whyte, who averaged 10.5 ppg and 5.9 rpg in conference play and had the game-winning drive to the hoop at Army. Sophomore guard Javante McCoy started over 20 game as well and tallied 21 points in the PL quarterfinal win over Lehigh to finish the season at 9.3 ppg.
They will be joined by six newcomers this season, including Jack Hemphill who ranked No. 36 at the power forward position according to ESPN.com last year. After transferring from Texas Tech back in January, redshirt freshman guard Alex Vilarino is also eligible to play this year.
BU will open its 110th season at 2018 co-CAA regular season champion Northeastern on Tuesday, Nov. 6 and then welcome America East regular season champion Vermont to Case Gym on Friday, Nov. 9.
