Lightning Cortet Strike Propels BU to 1-0 2OT Upset Victory over No. 22 Navy
October 26, 2019 | Men's Soccer
BOSTON – Claiming its first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2014, the Boston University men's soccer team used a 35-yard strike from senior Satchel Cortet to upset No. 22 Navy, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
Cortet netted his second golden goal of the year following a successful header against Colgate back on Oct. 5, as the Terriers (4-10-1, 3-4-0 PL) earned their fourth victory in five contests. Junior goalkeeper Michael Stone tallied two saves with sophomore Nate Cole adding a critical team save late in the first half to hand the Midshipmen (11-2-1, 4-2-1 PL) their second shutout loss of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU came out attacking to start the game and nearly took the lead in the seventh minute, as sophomore Kari Petursson nailed the far post with a hard low grounder.
- The Terriers earned their first corner kick in the 13th minute, but Cortet's header was blocked.
- Navy almost grabbed the lead in the 39th minute by finding Jacob Williams on the left side, as he managed to get around Stone but was forced into rushing a shot blocked by Cole.
- The Midshipmen found the 6-foot-7 Matt Nocita in the box on the ensuing corner for a header shot that went over the crossbar.
- Nocita went wide in the 48th minute, and Stone saved a near point-blank shot by Tyler Collins on another corner at 58:09 to keep the game scoreless.
- Ian Bramblett guarded the left side of the net on an angle and was in position to stop a shot from Petursson at 65:05.
- Senior Matt McDonnell had a strong header while falling to the ground at 88:51, but Bramblett made the save.
- Navy had a corner kick in the first minute of overtime and the only shot at 98:28.
- The Midshipmen had one more corner in the first minute of the second overtime but the header by Toni Adewole was well wide.
- Freshman Miles Dycaico set up the game winner by collecting a loose ball following a throw-in from Navy and centering the ball to set up Cortet's shot.
- Cortet now has two goals for the third straight season and is tied for second on the team in points with senior sophomore Kari Petursson (1g,2a) and freshman Marc Roura (1g,2a).
- Dycaico became the seventh Terrier to tally an assist this year and the ninth to earn a point.
- The Terriers defeated a ranked team for the first time since beating then-No. 25 Dartmouth in 2014 on the road.
- Navy was ranked as high as No. 15 by College Soccer News earlier in the year and entered the contest No. 22 in this week's poll.
- The teams finished in a 10-10 deadlock in shots despite the Midshipmen claiming an 8-3 advantage in corners.
- BU improved to a perfect 4-0-0 at home against Navy with the last three contests featuring an identical 1-0 result while also claiming its second overtime victory in the series for an overall record of 5-2-0.
- The Terriers have tallied at least two golden goals in the same season since they recorded three in 2015 en route to an NCAA at-large berth.
- The Terriers will honor their six-member senior class and then face the defending Patriot League regular season champion Greyhounds on Saturday (Nov. 2) at 1 p.m.
- Loyola has won the last two meetings, a 3-1 home win in 2018 and 2-1 road victory in 2017, following a 3-3 draw in 2016 in Baltimore.
