Cartwright Named Throws Coach
November 8, 2019 | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field
BOSTON – Grant Cartwright will join the Boston University track & field program as throws coach, director of track & field and cross country Gabe Sanders announced this week.
Cartwright, a three-time USTFCCCA DI All-American, joins Sanders' staff after serving as an assistant coach at Michigan, his alma mater, since 2018.
"While young in his coaching career, Grant showed and demonstrated wisdom and maturity well beyond his years during the entire search process," said Sanders. "Grant comes from a pedigree and background that has produced some of the best throws coaches in the NCAA today. His dedication to his craft, his open mindset of improvement, his admiration for the overall student-athlete experience at a high-level academic institution, and his familiarity with being a part of a high achieving NCAA program completely set him apart from the field. I have no doubt that he is the right fit for Boston University and our program."
During his collegiate career at Michigan, Cartwright was a USTFCCCA first-team All-American in the indoor weight throw in 2017 and a second-team All-American in both the indoor weight throw and the outdoor shot put in 2018. In 2017, Cartwright won the Big Ten Indoor Championship in the weight throw and was named the Big Ten Indoor Field Athlete of the Year.
Cartwright was voted team captain by teammates in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and was named team MVP in 2017 and 2018. He finished his collegiate career ranked as the second-best collegiate thrower in NCAA history (hammer, weight throw, shot put and discus).
"I want to thank coach Sanders and the rest of his staff for allowing me to become a part of this team," said Cartwright. "I am extremely excited to get to work at Boston University. There are few institutions in the country that allow student-athletes to be challenged both academically and athletically. Boston University is at the pinnacle of both and I am enthusiastic to have the opportunity to guide student-athletes through this challenge towards academic and athletic excellence."
Cartwright, a Powell, Ohio native, graduated from Michigan in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biopsychology cognition and neuroscience and was a four-time Scholar Athlete Award recipient.
"Grant Cartwright has done an outstanding job of assisting our program the last year and a half. He was a very successful thrower at the NCAA and Big Ten level. Grant is a great teacher and has an excellent understanding of training and technical methodology of the throws. He will be a successful coach.
- Jerry Clayton, Head Coach, Men's Track and Field, University of Michigan.
"Grant is a great hire. His passion for the throwing events is evident by his success across many events at the big ten and national levels. Taking on the throws program after Jarrod Rome's passing is something that Grant will do with care and respect. I expect to continue to see great growth out of the throws program at Boston University with Grant as the lead."
- Lucais MacKay, Assistant Coach, Track and Field, Penn State University
