PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Freshman
Julia Nearis notched two goals, including the game-winner early in the third period, to lift the No. 10 Boston University women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Providence on Saturday afternoon at Schneider Arena.
BU (6-3-1, 3-3-1 HEAW) led Providence (4-5-2, 2-3-0 HEAW) after 40 minutes thanks to Nearis' second-period strike, but the Friars equalized on the power play just 4:28 into the third frame. Nearis came through just 1:06 later, however, when she converted a pass from junior
Nara Elia for her sixth goal of the season.
Redshirt
Sammy Davis assisted on both goals and freshman
Nadia Mattivi collected her first collegiate point with the primary assist on the first marker.
Junior goaltender
Corinne Schroeder was once again terrific between the pipes. She made 26 saves and did not allow an even-strength goal to preserve the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Schroeder made 13 saves in the opening frame, with her best stop coming at the end of the period when she gloved down a point-blank chance following a brave block by senior Breanna Scarpaci.
- Nearis opened the scoring at the 9:30 mark of the second stanza. Davis worked the puck to Mattivi at the top of the left circle. Mattivi quickly dished the puck to Nearis in the right circle, and the rookie forward made no mistake to give BU a 1-0 edge.
- Neve Van Pelt equalized for the Friars with a redirected shot during a power play.
- Nearis responded moments later to give BU the lead for good with her fourth power-play strike of the season. Elia, stationed below the goal line, dished it to Davis at the top of the right circle. Davis went right back to Elia with the puck, and the junior immediately sent the puck to Nearis between the hash marks for a one-timer that beat Sandra Abstreiter (21 saves).
- The Terriers killed four power plays in the remaining 14:26 of regulation to preserve their lead, including a 6-on-4 advantage with 8.9 seconds on the clock.
GAME NOTES
- This was Nearis' second two-goal game of her brief collegiate career; she also lit the lamp twice at Penn State on Oct. 26.
- Nearis leads the Terriers with six goals.
- Mattivi became the third BU rookie to record a point this season thanks to her assist.
- Schroeder has yet to allow more than two goals in any of her eight starts.
- She owns a .950 save percentage and a 1.37 goals-against average.
- Junior Jesse Compher made her season debut after missing the first nine games due to injury.
