Terriers Rally at UConn Before Falling in Overtime, 3-2

HARTFORD, Conn. - Despite a successful third-period rally to force overtime, the Boston University men's ice hockey team fell at UConn, 3-2, on Friday evening at XL Center in the opener of a home-and-home weekend.
Juniors Patrick Harper and Patrick Curry scored in the third to erase a 2-0 deficit and the latter came with 1:05 left in regulation with goaltender Jake Oettinger pulled.
The Huskies, who scored twice in the opening period, took advantage of a rebound just 51 seconds into overtime to come away with the two points.
BU now stands at 10-15-3 on the year with an 8-8-2 Hockey East mark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- UConn had three power plays in the first 10 minutes of regulation and scored on the middle one to open the scoring.
- Philip Nyberg found Karl El-Mir for a tally from the left dot 7:06 into the game.
- With 2:09 left in the opening period, Wyatt Newpower's wrister from the top right of the of slot got through traffic and beat Oettinger high glove side for a 2-0 UConn lead.
- No goals were scored in the second period but the physical play picked up with 32 combined penalty minutes in the stanza.
- With the teams skating 4-on-4, Harper got BU on the board with just under 10 minutes left in regulation on a wraparound at the right post.
- BU continued to threaten while looking for an equalizer and got one moments after pulling Oettinger in favor of an extra attacker.
- From the lower right circle, Curry roofed a one-timer off a David Farrance pass, popping goaltender Tomas Vomacka's water bottle off at 18:55.
- UConn had all three shots of overtime, setting up back-to-back looks from just above the left circle.
- The second shot, which came from El-Mir, went off Oettinger and dropped right to the stick of Alexander Payusov, who skated in from the left side before depositing the rebound.
GAME NOTES
- Oettinger made 28 saves for the Terriers while Vomacka made 20 for the Huskies, who held a 31-22 shot advantage.
- UConn went 1-for-6 on the power play while BU came up empty on five chances.
- Farrance and junior Dante Fabbro each assisted on both of BU's goals.
- Curry's goal was his team-leading 11th of the season and his sixth in the past nine contests.
- Friday marked the 1,000th game on the BU bench for athletic trainer Larry Venis.
UP NEXT
- With BU's win over UConn in the Friendship Four back in November the season series between the two teams will be up for grabs on Saturday (Feb. 16) at Agganis Arena.
- Game time is set for 7 p.m.
