Terriers Advance All Four Boats to Semis at IRAs

RESULTS
GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The Boston University men's rowing team advanced all four boats to the semifinals in a very successful first day of racing at the 117th IRA National Championship Regatta. BU advanced all three of its eights directly to the semis for the first time since 2014 while the V4 advanced with a first place finish in the repechage. Friday marked the sixth-consecutive time BU has advance all of its boats to the semifinals of the IRAs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
VARSITY EIGHT
• The No. 8 seeded varsity eight boat finished second in its morning heat race and advanced to Saturday's semifinals. Coxed by Sean Dooling and stroked by Nils Kocher, the V8 got off to a good start alongside No. 1 seed Yale as the two boats separated from third-place and No. 9 seed Syracuse at the 500m mark. BU stretched its lead over Syracuse to a full length at the 1000m mark and cruised to the finish line in second place with a time of 5:41.49, behind Yale (5:38.37) and ahead of Syracuse (5:44.47), Wisconsin (5:45.9), Penn (5:51.86) and Santa Clara (5:56.86). With its second-place finish, BU advanced directly to Saturday's semifinals.
SECOND VARSITY EIGHT
• The No. 9 seeded second varsity eight boat also finished second in its morning heat race and advanced directly to the semifinals. No. 1 Washington got out to an early lead with BU and No. 8 Northeastern fighting for second. The Terrier 2V, coxed by William Mulhall and stroked by Andrew Marsh, pulled ahead of Northeastern by three seats at the 500m mark and settled into second place. BU extended their lead to a length at the 1000 meter mark was never seriously challenged by NU over the second half of the race. BU finished second with a time of 5:49.92, behind Washington (5:47.44) and ahead of Northeastern (5:53.45), Wisconsin (6:00.11) and Drexel (6:18.55). With the second-place finish, BU advanced directly to Saturday's semifinals.
THIRD VARSITY EIGHT
• The No. 7 seeded third varsity eight boat, coxed by Chloe Jacobs and stroked by Andrew Dellechiaie, also qualified for Saturday's semifinals by finishing second in its heat race. No. 2 Yale got out to a fast start followed by Navy in second and BU in third. BU caught Navy at the 500 meter mark and rowed through the Mids over the middle 1000 meters. BU settled into second place ahead of Navy by open water and finished with a time of 5:51.81 behind Yale (5:50.10) and ahead of Navy (5:57.99), Drexel (6:06.10) and Oregon State (6:06.68).
VARSITY FOUR
• Needing to finish first in its heat race to advance to the semis, the varsity four, coxed by Catherine O'Neal and stroked by Jack Schofield, finished second in its heat and moved on to the afternoon repechage. In the repechage, BU faced off against Dartmouth, Wisconsin and Northeastern. Dartmouth got out to an early lead with BU in second over the first 500 meters. BU and Dartmouth were virtually even at the 1000m mark but BU steadily pulled ahead of the Big Green over the second half of the race and opened a full length lead with 500m to go. BU cruised to an open water victory down the stretch, finishing with a time of 6:37.44, well ahead of second-place Dartmouth (6:41.12), third-place Wisconsin (6:44.39) and fourth-place Northeastern (6:53.40). With the win BU moved on to Saturday's semifinals.

Men's racing on Saturday will begin with the varsity eight semifinal A race at 11:36 am ET (8:36 PT) and conclude at 2pm ET with the men's varsity 4 semifinal D. Crews will be racing to qualify for Sunday's championship grand finals races. For a full schedule of races and results click HERE
