No. 8 Terriers Compete in Day 2 of IRAs

RESULTS
GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The Boston University men's rowing team competed in Day 2 of the IRA National Championship Regatta on Saturday, finishing fourth in four extremely close semifinal races against the top boats in the country. BU's 3V8 and V4 both missed qualifying for the grand final by less than .5 seconds while the V8 finished just one second out of a grand final qualifying spot.
The Terriers will compete in four petite final races on Sunday beginning with the V4 at 12:06 pm ET and concluding with the V8 at 2:04 pm ET.

HOW IT HAPPENED
VARSITY EIGHT
• In its semifinal race, the No. 8 seeded Terrier' V8, coxed by Sean Dooling and stroked by Nils Kocher, took on No. 2 Washington, No. 4 Harvard, No. 6 Princeton, No. 9 Syracuse and No. 11 Dartmouth with the top three boats advancing to the grand finals. Washington and Harvard pulled ahead early with Princeton and BU battling for the third position and Syracuse in fifth. Princeton opened up a seven-seat lead over BU at the 1000m mark before BU made a move on the Tigers. BU cut the Princeton lead to 3 seats with 100 meters to go but the Tigers answered and took the coveted third and final grand final spot by just one second.

SECOND VARSITY EIGHT
• In its semifinal race, the No. 9 seeded second varsity eight boat, coxed by William Mulhall and stroked by Andrew Marsh, faced No. 2 Harvard, No. 4 Brown, No. 6 Yale, No. 8 Northeastern and No. 11 Navy with the top three boats advancing to the grand finals. Yale was the early leader with Harvard in second followed by Brown, BU and Northeastern. Harvard took the lead over Yale at the 1000 meter mark while Brown and BU settled into a fierce battle for third. Brown opened a three-seat lead over BU but the Terriers made a move down the stretch. The Bears answered BU's challenged over the final 100 meters however and held off the Terriers for the final grand final spot by less than 2 seconds.

THIRD VARSITY EIGHT
• The No. 7 seeded third varsity eight boat took on No. 1 Washington, No. 3 Princeton, No. 4 Cal, No. 8 Dartmouth and No. 10 Navy in its exciting semifinal race again with the top three boats advancing to the grand finals. Washington got out to an early lead followed by Princeton in second and Cal in third. The BU 3V, coxed by Chloe Jacobs and stroked by Andrew Dellechiaie, made a move on Cal at the 1000 meter mark and the two boats battled for the final grand final spot over the last 1000m. BU pulled even with Cal with 500 meters to go and the two boats approached the finish line dead even. But it was the Golden Bears who took third and the grand final spot by a bow ball, winning by just .5 seconds in a very tight race.

VARSITY FOUR
• In the unseeded varsity four semifinal, the Terriers faced Washington, Stetson, MIT, Marist and Navy with the top three boats advancing to the grand finals. Washington pulled ahead early with Stetson in second and BU and MIT battling for third. The V4, coxed by Catherine O'Neal and stroked by Jack Schofield, trailed MIT at the 1000m but made a move over the final 500 meters. As BU and MIT battled fiercely for third the two crews drew even with second-place Stetson and the three boats crossed the line in a razor thin photo finish. After a long video review, it was determined by the judges that BU finished fourth with a time of 6:26.922, just .61 seconds out of second place and .64 out of third.
