BOSTON – A great game was decided by a penalty call in the second overtime period as Boston University fell to No. 12 Northeastern, 5-4, in the 68th Beanpot championship game on Monday evening at TD Garden.
For the second time in as many weeks, the Terriers officially played to a draw and were able to force overtime thanks to freshman
Trevor Zegras' second goal of the game with just 1.2 seconds remaining in regulation.
After a scoreless five-minute overtime session, Northeastern's Ryan Shea grabbed the stick of BU senior
Patrick Harper and fell to the ice, eliciting a tripping call on Harper in the 79th minute of play. Jordan Harris provided the winner at the 79:33 mark on an effort from the center point.
BU, which also got goals from sophomore
Jake Wise and junior
David Farrance, moves to 10-9-8 on the year. The Terriers were playing in the Beanpot title game for the fifth time in six years.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU needed just 2:49 to take a 1-0 lead. Quercia fired a shot on net that Craig Pantano thought he had covered. The puck snuck through the netminder's pads, however, and Wise knocked home the rebound for his second goal of the season.
- The Terriers then capitalized on their first power play of the contest at the 7:50 mark when Zegras skated to the top of the left circle and wristed a shot over Pantano's glove.
- Northeastern rallied in the second stanza, scoring four times, including twice on the power play, to take a 4-2 lead into the final frame.
- Farrance got a goal back for the Terriers just 1:56 into the third period during a power-play chance. Cockerill provided a great screen in front of Pantano and Farrance's wrister had eyes for the back of the net.
- Graduate student Sam Tucker, who replaced freshman Aston Abel midway through regulation, made several spectacular stops throughout the early part of third period to keep BU within a goal.
- Those stops proved crucial as Zegras collected a wide attempt at the left crease and potted it with 1.2 ticks left in the third to make send it to extra time.
GAME NOTES
- BU outshot Northeastern, 44-33, and held a combined 15-6 advantage in the overtime periods.
- The Terriers went 2-for-3 on the power play while the Huskies were 3-for-7 with the man advantage.
- Farrance had his second consecutive three-point Beanpot performance (1g, 2a) while Wise added an assist for the second multi-point night of his career.
- Harper had a pair of assists for the Terriers.
- Tucker stopped the first 18 shots he faced before Harris' winner.
- Zach Solow earned tournament MVP honors for the Huskies while Craig Pantano made 40 saves en route to receiving the Eberly Award for having the top save percentage of the tournament.
- This was the second-longest Beanpot final in tournament history as the 2012 title tilt (a 3-2 Boston College win over BU) lasted just 20 seconds longer.
