BOSTON - The Boston University track & field program will return to a full complement of indoor meets at the Track & Tennis Center for the 2021-22 season, as announced by director of track & field
Gabe Sanders. This year's indoor season will begin on Saturday, Dec. 4, with the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener.
Home to some of the fastest times in history, the "Launchpad" will once again welcome athletes from across the NCAA and the entire track world throughout the upcoming winter after the normal 2020-21 schedule was canceled due to COVID regulations.
"The only words that come to mind are 'it's good to be back!'," said Sanders. "It's amazing being back at full capacity training with our team, and now getting the opportunity to open the doors to the TTC up to the athletics world again refreshes our pride in being a part of this institution and program. The fastest track in the world will have its work cut out going into another world championship year, and it's up for the challenge. More importantly to us, our athletes are excited to race on their home track again, and for our first-year student-athletes, getting to experience for the first time the world-class atmosphere the Launchpad offers. It's good to be a Terrier, and again, it's good to be back!"
The Colyear-Danville Season Opener will be the lone December meet at the TTC. The traditional January-February stretch at the facility will start on Jan. 22 with The Battle In Beantown, a meet featuring several local teams. That will kick off a run of four straight weekends at the TTC as the John Thomas Terrier Classic will take place on Jan. 28-29 followed by the Bruce Lehane Scarlet & White Invite on Feb. 5 and the David Hemery Valentine Invite on Feb. 11-12. The Last Chance Meet concludes the schedule on Feb. 27.
In concert with the overall Valentine meet, BU will host the inaugural Jarred Rome Shotput Invitational in honor of the former coach and all-time great U.S. thrower Jarred Rome. The invite will bring together some of the best collegiate and post-collegiate throwers in the world with the goal to become one of the premier throwing competitions in the U.S. during the indoor season.Â
The Battle in Beantown and Lehane Scarlet & White Invite are closed team invitationals with selective individual entries. The John Thomas Terrier Classic and David Hemery Invite will be broken up into competition segments during the day (morning/afternoon/evening) on their respective weekends. Women's competition will take place on Fridays with the men competing on Saturdays.Â
Further meet details will be released later this fall regarding daily schedules and entry information.
