LOWELL, Mass. - Junior Case McCarthy lit the lamp late in the third period to try and spark a comeback, but the No. 19 Boston University men's ice hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to UMass Lowell on Saturday night at Tsongas Center.
Junior Robert Mastrosimone assisted on McCarthy's extra-attacker goal with 1:35 remaining in regulation. The Terriers pulled sophomore Drew Commesso (26 saves) again to try and level the score, but despite offensive-zone pressure, they were unable to equalize.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Jamie Armstrong thought he put his team ahead with 8:42 to go in the first period when he redirected a Tyler Boucher shot into the back of the net, but after video review the call was overturned due to goaltender interference.
- Lowell struck first with 1:28 remaining in the opening frame.
- Commesso and McCarthy combined to keep the deficit at one midway through the second period. After Commesso stopped the first shot with a nice save, McCarthy was stationed on the right post to clear away a sure goal off the rebound chance.
- The River Hawks scored on a shorthanded breakaway at the 16:26 mark to take a 2-0 lead into the final 20 minutes.
- Sophomore Dylan Peterson rang a shot off the post midway through the third in attempt to get on the board.
- Boucher found graduate student Max Kaufman in the slot with a sweet pass from behind the goal line, but Owen Savory (19 saves) smothered the attempt to keep his team ahead by two late in the third.
- BU pulled Commesso in favor of an extra attacker with 2:46 to play in the third and immediately generated a scoring chance, but Savory covered the puck before a Terrier could jam it home.
- McCarthy struck with 1:35 to play in regulation. Boucher and Mastrosimone battled two Lowell skaters along the half-wall, and Mastrosimone came away with the puck. He dished it to McCarthy at the top of the slot and the junior defender fired a shot past Savory for his first goal of the season.
- The Terriers continued to battle for the tying goal but Lowell was able to control the puck in the corner in the final 10 seconds to close out the contest.
