Forty-seven Terriers (24 men, 23 women) are scheduled to compete including 15 freshmen (8 men, 7 women) making their collegiate debuts. Freshman Toby Makoyawo, the European U20 100-meter dash champion, is expected to threaten the BU school record in the 60-meter dash (6.80, Johann Jack, 1999).
"Our expectations this weekend are simply to go out and have fun for the first time in a long time at a track meet," said Sanders. "We have some high expectations for our season and there are some people in positions, based on what we've seen in preseason training, that could have some pretty stellar debuts, like Toby Makoyawo.
"Matt Mason will be going for the Canadian men's junior record in the 5k after a stellar cross country season. We have a few young throwers – Kiana Lino, Cole Tucker, Gabe Hickman – who are some of the top-tier freshmen in the country in the shot put. We also have a returning thrower, Bridget Bishop, who was a PL medalist last season.
"We still want to temper expectations, though, it's still very early – it's December and many of our athletes are looking to be training through May, June and, for some, July. There's a lot of refinement going on with some very specific things we're working on. While we're looking for good final results, more importantly we're looking at the process is looking like to get to those results."
The women's 5,000-meter run will feature several of the top distance runners in the NCAA including many who were among the fastest at the recent national cross country championships.
"We're just really excited to get started with everyone and then move on to a bit more training through the winter break before getting going again in January," added Sanders.
