September 11, 2021 | Women's Cross Country
AMHERST, Mass. - The Boston University women's cross country team opened its 2021 season at the Minuteman Invite on Saturday morning at the UMass Cross Country Course.
BU got out to a controlled start, moving up as the race went along, and ultimately finished fourth with 97 points, just one point behind host UMass. UConn won the event with 29 points.
"Today was a really strong opener for both groups", associate head cross country coach Jordan Carpenter said. The goal was to get out controlled and work on competing well over the closing kilometers of the race. With this being our first true cross country race in nearly two years, it was incredible to be back out on the grass. I am excited about where we are as a group in early September and look forward to see both of our squads progress as the season moves along."
Graduate student Corinne Batsu led the Terriers with a 12th-place performance. She finished the 5K course in 18:02.4. Graduate student Madeline Bachmann was 16th with a time of 18:06.6; both All-Patriot League runners from this past spring moved up well throughout the race. Senior Angela Castronuovo (18:28.5) finished 26th, followed by graduate student Veronica Kriss (18:37.4) in 31st.
Six Terriers made their collegiate debuts on Saturday, led by freshman Sarah Hanifin (18:51.6) in 35th. Sophomore Daisy Liljegren (18:55.2) was 37th in her first race as a Terrier, followed by sophomore Addie Marple (18:55.8) and freshman Faith Meininger (18:56.9) in 38th and 39th, respectively, in their BU debuts.
Sophomore Claire Wilson began her BU cross country career with a time of 19:13.9 while senior Kalie Mathis (19:59.2), Junior Anna Kavanagh (20:48.8) and freshman Olivia Duca (21:01.5) also raced.
BU will have next weekend off before heading to Franklin Park to compete in the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown on Friday, Sept. 24.
