Terriers Defeat Holy Cross, 2-0, in Exhibition

BOSTON - Junior Julia Nearis and freshman Liv Haag each scored in the third period to lift the Boston University women's ice hockey team to a 2-0 exhibition win over Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon at Walter Brown Arena.
Senior goaltender Nicole McGuigan started the game and made eight saves over 30:30 of work before freshman Callie Shanahan took over and stopped all seven shots she faced. Senior Courtney Correia and junior Nadia Mattivi assisted on Nearis' power-play strike while sophomore Catherine Foulem had the helper on Haag's strike.
HOW IT HAPPENED

HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU outshot the Crusaders, 10-4, in the first period but were unable to find a way past Jada Brenon (10 saves).
- The Terriers ramped up the pressure in the second stanza, outshooting Holy Cross by a 21-4 margin, but Sarah Street (21 saves) kept them off the board.
- McGuigan was sharp in goal for BU, making a few nice stops to keep the Crusaders scoreless.
- BU finally broke through in the third period with a power-play strike. Mattivi and Correia rushed the puck into the zone, with Correia finding Nearis at the right post for the finish.
- Haag extended the lead to 2-0 when she broke in alone on Madison Beck (13 saves) and sent the puck into the back of the net.
- All seven of Shanahan's saves came in the final 20 minutes to preserve the win.
- This was the Terriers' first game in front of fans at Walter Brown Arena since Feb. 29, 2020.
- BU finished the game with 46 shots on goal and limited Holy Cross to just 15 attempts on net.
- Freshman Maggie Hanzel led BU with two blocked shots.
- The Terriers went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
- BU will open the regular season on Friday, Oct. 1, when the Teriers travel to New Hampshire begin a home-and-home series with the Wildcats.
- Puck drop is set for 6 p.m.
