BOSTON – The Boston University men's, women's openweight, and women's lightweight rowing teams are primed to compete at the 57th Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR). In total, the programs will have 11 boats featuring current student-athletes, and 18 total boats with BU representation, traverse the three-mile course along the Charles River from Oct. 22-23, with the Terriers' DeWolfe Boathouse once again serving as the official start line.
Since its inception in 1965, the Head of the Charles Regatta annually attracts more than 11,000 athletes competing in more than 2,000 boats to the banks of the Charles River. This year features 72 events, beginning with the Senior/Grand Veteran Singles on Friday (Oct. 21) at 7:45 a.m. For a map of where to watch along the course, click HERE.
BU HOCR RACE SCHEDULE
Saturday, Oct. 22
Sunday, Oct. 23
MEN'S ROWING
The men's rowing program makes its 2022-23 debut at the Head of the Charles. Last year, BU took 10th place at the 2022 IRA Championship, and captured seventh place in the Rowe Cup at the Eastern Sprints. The Terriers also came from behind to defeat No. 12 Wisconsin to win the Jablonic Cup. At the 2021 Head of the Charles, the Terriers' Club Eights took sixth and 11th place, while the Championship Fours and Eights both finished in the top-15.
BU has four crews with current student-athletes competing, including two entries in the Club Eights on Saturday (Oct. 22) at 1:09 p.m. On Sunday (Oct. 23), the Championship Four boat starts at 1:07 p.m., followed by the Championship Eights at 1:38 p.m.
"The team is excited about the Head of the Charles," said Head Coach Thomas Bohrer. "The team has made steady progress since we have arrived on campus in September. It will be good to see a full field of teams at the regatta this year, including international teams. The HOCR is a big deal for our program as it is on our home course. Men's Rowing is also celebrating 85 years of rowing at Boston University, and the team will be racing in "vintage" racing shirts from the 50's. All around, there is a lot of excitement. It's time for the team to see what we can do."
WOMEN'S LIGHTWEIGHT ROWING
The lightweight rowing program is the lone Terrier crew to have competed so far in the 2022-23 season, having collected a pair of top-20 results at the Head of the Housatonic back on Oct. 8. BU finished runner-up at the 2022 IRA Championship, as Class of 2022 graduates Grace Beery and Kathryn Grabowski earned silver in the double sculls and the Varsity 4 crew took the bronze. Ranked as high as third in the country, BU retained the Beanpot over Harvard-Radcliffe and MIT. Last year's BU HOCR crews recorded a second-place and two fourth-place finishes in the Championship Fours and Eights.
The Terriers race on Sunday (Oct. 23), starting with the two Championship Four crews at 1:20 p.m. The Championship Eight entry rows that same day at 2:11 p.m.
"The Head of the Charles is the highlight of the Fall racing calendar, and we're grateful to have the opportunity to participate," said Head Coach Malcolm Doldron. "BU Lightweight Rowing is looking forward to competing at a high level, and we're excited to welcome back our alumni, friends, and families for the occasion."
WOMEN'S OPENWEIGHT ROWING
The women's openweight rowing squad also competes in its first event in the 2022-23 campaign. Last year, the Terriers captured their second Patriot League championship in program history. At the 2022 NCAA Championships, the program took 19th place with 23 points, improving on their prior appearance in the event in 2014. At last year's Head of the Charles, BU had top-11 finishes in all four of its events.
BU has four boats in the event, starting with the Club Fours on Saturday (Oct. 22) at 12:43 p.m. and Club Eights at 1:24 p.m. The Championship Four crew races on Sunday (Oct. 23) at 1:20 p.m., followed by the Championship Eights at 2:11 p.m.
"We're excited to welcome our alumni, friends, and families back to DeWolfe Boathouse this weekend," said Director of Rowing Madeline Davis Tully. "The team has trained well through the fall, and looks forward to the opportunity for an early-season test against great crews from across the country and world."
