BOSTON - Freshman
Martu Coulo scored a pair of goals and sophomore
Ella Rottinghaus added her first of the season as the Boston University field hockey team moved into sole possession of first place in the Patriot League standings with a 3-2 home win over Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Berylson Field. The Terriers held their annual Senior Day and honored the Class of 2023 prior to the game.
The Terriers, who clinched a spot in the Patriot League tournament with the win, scored all three goals in a span of eight minutes in the opening quarter to jump out to a 3-0 lead. The Raiders got on the board in the second quarter and made it a one-goal affair in the 41st minute before BU held off a late push.
BU is now 4-0 in the Patriot League and an even .500 overall at 6-6. Colgate falls to 2-11 with an 0-3 conference mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Coulo opened the scoring just 3:27 into the contest with an impressive individual effort as she pressured a Colgate back in the circle, created a turnover and then drilled a reverse shot to the boards for her second goal of the season.
- The Terriers turned a one-goal lead into a three-goal lead in the blink of an eye, scoring nearly identical goals 24 seconds apart later in the first.
- Senior Ellie McIntyre penetrated the circle from the right side and then got past a defender along the end line before finding Rottinghaus wide open in front for a goal at 10:42.Â
- Seconds later, junior Tess Csejka took a similar route from the right and then snuck a quick pass to the far post, where Coulo completed her first two-goal performance to suddenly make it a 3-0 game.
- Colgate was able to use a corner to get on the board soon after as Aaliyah Linfoot chased down a deflected shot on the left side and then sent the ball back into the circle to Ella Murhpy, who turned and fired a shot to the boards for her team-leading fifth goal of the season at the 17:28 mark.
- At the half, the Terriers held a 3-1 lead and a 10-5 shot advantage.
- BU did not allow a shot on goal in the third and earned four of its six corners during the quarter but was unable to build on its lead.
- Colgate was the better side in the final quarter, adding one more goal before threatening to tie the contest.
- Amanda Allen scored off a corner in the 41st minute to make it a one-goal affair.
- Senior Caroline Kelly made three of her five saves in the final quarter, including an impressive diving stop off a corner with under 10 minutes to play to preserve the lead.
