BOSTON - Junior Thalia Steenssens scored her first goal of the season in the sixth minute of overtime to lift the Boston University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over crosstown rival Northeastern on Sunday afternoon at Dedham Field.

Sophomore Payton Anderson opened the scoring on a first-quarter penalty stroke but the Huskies drew even before halftime.

BU improves to 7-6 and extends its win streak to three games while Northeastern falls to 2-9.

HOW IT HAPPENED

BU held a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal in the opening quarter and both shots came from the same play.
Steenssens set up freshman Amalia Preece for a breakaway and the striker's shot was saved but she drew a penalty stroke in the process.
Anderson took the try and converted for her fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead at the 13:15 mark.
The Huskies put together a strong second quarter with eight shots and five corners and drew a stroke of their own in the opening moments of the frame.
BU goalkeeper Caroline Kelly came up with a save on the stroke, using a low dive to her right side to keep it a 1-0 game.
The home team was able to get an equalizer before the half, however, as Emmy Stubbs found the back of the cage with 2:26 left before halftime.
The Terriers were the better side from the third quarter on and nearly got a game-winner in regulation on a handful of chances late in in the fourth.
Playing in its first overtime of the season, BU controlled the extra session from the first whistle on, recording four shots while allowing none.
The winning play started with Anderson penetrating the circle from the right side, where she tried to put the ball on goal but had the attempt blocked.
Freshman Amalia Preece corralled the loose ball and dribbled in before finding graduate student Casey Thompson in front of the goal.
Thompson redirected the ball towards the cage and right before it reached NU netminder Jonna Kennedy, Steenssens tipped it past her to the boards to end the game at 65:09.

GAME NOTES

BU held a 15-12 shot advantage, including a 12-2 margin after halftime.
Steenssens became the ninth Terrier to score a goal this season.
Thompson boosted her team-leading assist total to six, matching her total from last season.
Kelly made five saves with four coming before halftime.
Kennedy made four saves for the Huskies with two coming in overtime.

UP NEXT

The Terriers will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 15) when they visit Lafayette for a Patriot League contest.
Game time in Easton, Pa., is set for noon.
