EASTON, Pa. - Sophomore Lucy Johnson scored the game's lone goal and senior Sophie Ortyl recorded her second consecutive Patriot League semifinal shutout as the Boston University field hockey team downed second-seeded American, 1-0, at Rappolt Field on Thursday to return to the Patriot League title game.
Johnson cleaned up a rebound off a corner in the 39th minute and Ortyl stopped all seven shots she faced, avenging a regular-season loss to the Eagles and setting up a date with top-seeded Lafayette in Saturday's championship game.

Johnson cleaned up a rebound off a corner in the 39th minute and Ortyl stopped all seven shots she faced, avenging a regular-season loss to the Eagles and setting up a date with top-seeded Lafayette in Saturday's championship game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers put together a strong opening quarter but had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard.
- BU forced American netminder Teagan Harmon to make six saves in the first quarter while defending four corners.
- Midway through the first, senior Nicole Lauro appeared to score off a corner, but after an American challenge it was determined that her shot was too high by the slimmest of margins.
- The second quarter was evenly matched but but the lone shot on goal in the frame came from American, which Ortyl turned aside.
- The decisive goal came on the latter of back-to-back corners as Johnson was positioned at the right post and pounced on a saved shot that trickled past Harmon at the 38:47 mark.
- All five shots recorded in the fourth quarter came off American sticks and the Eagles pressured the Terriers with three corners in the frame.Â
- Ortyl and the Terriers were up to the task, however, and BU hung on for the one-goal win.
GAME NOTES
- BU outshot American 16-12 while American held a 7-6 edge in corners.
- Harmon made nine saves in goal for American.Â
- Ortyl is now 3-0 in Patriot League tournament games and has a combined .846 save percentage and 0.67 goals-against average in those contests.
UP NEXT
- BU will play in its 10th Patriot League title game on Saturday (Nov. 7) when it takes on top-seeded Lafayette.
- The Leopards earned a 2-0 win last Friday in a game that determined the regular-season title.
- The Terriers are 5-4 all-time in PL finals.
- Saturday's game starts at noon.
