PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Freshman goaltender Callie Shanahan made 42 saves to help the Boston University women's ice hockey team earn 1-1 tie against Providence on Friday night at Schneider Arena.
Providence (14-13-6, 11-12-3 HE) earned the extra point in the Hockey East standings with a 2-1 shootout win over BU (12-13-6, 11-8-5 HE). With the point, the Terriers guaranteed that they will avoid the opening round and begin the league tournament in the quarterfinals.
Senior Alex Allan notched her third goal of the season just 57 seconds into the contest. Juniors Haylee Blinkhorn and Julia Nearis provided the assists on Allan's goal. The Friars scored a power-play goal at 12:52 of the first frame to even the score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Allan gave BU a 1-0 lead just 57 seconds into the proceedings. Blinkhorn gave the puck to Allan at the left point and Allan skated to the left circle before sending a shot towards goal that Providence blocked. Allan gathered the rebound, however, and took the puck around the net before wrapping it around the right post and into the back of the net.
- Shanahan kept the Terriers ahead midway through the frame with two terrific saves in quick succession.
- Providence answered on its first power play of the game to even the score with 7:08 to play in the first period.
- Shanahan was the Terriers' best player in the second stanza, as she made several nice stops as part of her 12-save effort in that period.
- BU generated nine shots on target in the second, with senior Mackenna Parker producing the two best chances.
- Sophomore Catherine Foulem nearly gave BU a 2-1 lead just seconds into the third period, but Abstreiter made the necessary save.
- Providence earned a power play with 3:07 remaining in regulation, but Shanahan made three saves during the penalty kill to help force overtime.
- Senior Courtney Correia had a great chance in the first minute of OT, but Abstreiter was equal to the task after Correia skated by a Friar defender.
- Shanahan made the save of the night with just 1:34 to play in the extra session. Lindsay Bochna collected a pass all alone in front of the net, but Shanahan reacted in time to make the save and send the teams to the shootout.
- Nearis extended her point streak to four games with her assist.
- She has tallied five points (1g, 4a) over those four fixtures and now leads BU with 16 assists this year.
- Allan has scored three of her four career goals this season.
- This was Shanahan's second game with over 40 saves; she made a career-best 53 stops at Northeastern on Jan. 21.
- Shanahan has posted 30 or more saves on five different occasions.
- The teams combined to take just three penalties on Friday night.
- BU will honor its seven seniors - Alex Allan, Courtney Correia, Nicole McGuigan, Mackenna Parker, Kate Stuart and Emma Wuthrich - as well as graduate student Ellie Larson, prior to Saturday's game against the Friars.
- The contest is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will be televised live on NESN+.
