February 27, 2022 | Men's Track & Field
Senior Andrea Claeson and freshman Toby Makoyawo each won two events on Sunday with Claeson claiming gold in mile run (4:45.19) and the 3,000-meter run (9:38.83) and Makoyawo sweeping the 60- and 200-meter dashes with times of 6.67 and 21.45 seconds. Claeson was named Female Track Athlete of the Meet and Makoyawo was tabbed the Male Rookie of the Meet while sharing the individual point lead with Marshall Beatty of Army West Point.
Junior Noelani Phillips reached the top of the podium in the 400-meter dash in a personal-record 55.97 seconds and freshman Emma Lawrence was victorious in the triple jump with a personal-best 12.21-meter leap.
The men had their best finish since 2017 while the women claimed third for the third straight PL indoor meet. Both squads had impressive gains in point totals from 2020 as the men totaled 91 points, up from 43, and the women totaled 140.5 points, up from 111.5
Claeson had an incredible afternoon on Sunday, taking the mile and 3000-meter titles before helping the distance medley relay place third along with sophomores Addie Marple and Jules Hogan and fellow senior Megan Convery. BU took three of the top four spots in the women's mile with Convery placing second (4:47.70) and senior Madeline Bachmann taking fourth (4:50.66).
In the jumps, Lawrence and fellow rookie Asia Hamilton had incredible PL debuts as Hamilton finished second behind Lawrence in the triple jump (12.08m) before adding another silver in the high jump (1.70m). Lawrence first reached the podium on Saturday with a second-place effort in the long jump.
Sophomore Dakota Jackson finished runner-up to Makoyawo in the 60-yard dash in a time of 6.79. He also picked up two points with a seventh-place finish in the 200 (22.37).
In the throwing cage, freshman Gabe Hickman made his first PL meet a success with a second-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 17.13 meters, second only to senior Jamir Gibson of Army West Point. Led by senior Bridget Bishop in fifth (14.20m), BU had three of the top 10 finishers in the women's shot put.
Sophomore Daisy Liljegren added another bronze medal on Sunday, taking third in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:42.15. Seniors Corinne Batsu (5th, (9:45.70) and Veronica Kriss (6th, 9:48.95) gave the Terriers four of the top six spots in the 3,000.

Reaction from the Assistant Coaches
Kristin Fleagle - Jumps/Multis
"The jumps group turned it on this weekend! Between women's high jump, long jump, and triple jump we scored 39 points for the team. In the women's triple jump, Emma Lawrence and Asia Hamilton jumped the top two jumps, good enough for spots on the BU top-10 list. On the men's side, we brought in 16 points between the long jump, high jump and the heptathlon. It was amazing to have our two first-year men sneak into the finals in men's long jump and score for us when they weren't ranked to do so. Senior Jack Reynolds showed up big time with seven personal bests in the hep. He had to battle to the finish line in the 1000-meter run and it was good for a fifth0place finish. Nearly everywhere we had someone competing, we had a season's best, a lifetime personal best, or a point-scoring finish, and I couldn't be more proud. This whole group has been silently working for the whole year, and they finally got to show up. It was a really good weekend!"
Jordan Carpenter - Distance
"The Terrier women distance crew came in to this meet with big expectations in terms of scoring points and competing for podium places. I thought that as a group we rose to the challenge and dominated the distance events. The front of every race had a Terrier woman near the front and we made our presence known. Andrea Claeson had a huge meet, running five races across the two days and helping to score a total of 31 team points while seeing the podium three times.
"The men's distance squad entered the meet a bit shorthanded due to some late health issues, but the rest of the crew really battled. Kevin Murphy had a huge weekend and has inserted himself as a force within the Patriot League. His grit was so fun to watch as he broke away from the field to secure second in the 5000 meters. We also had big performances from the mile squad and 4x800-meter relay team, all adding points to the team total. We are excited to see what this squad can do as we get back to full strength in the outdoor season!"
Grant Cartwright - Throws
"The throws took a great step forward this weekend from where we were in indoors in 2020. Several of our athletes stepped up big with clutch performances or performances close to or above their lifetime best. Everyone, especially our underclassmen, gained extremely valuable experience of what it is like to compete at a championship-level meet, and that will be crucial moving forward as we continue to strive for improvement. With a group as young as ours, every competitive opportunity is a great chance to learn from and apply to future competitions. We are ready to get back to work and reload for outdoor season."
