Men’s Basketball Accepts Invitation to Compete in the College Basketball Invitational

March 11, 2022

BOSTON – Having already captured one trophy in the Sunshine State this season, the Boston University men's basketball team will be in search of another after accepting an invitation to compete in the 2022 Roman College Basketball Invitational (CBI), head coach Joe Jones announced Friday morning.

The 16-team single-elimination tournament will be held from March 19-23 at the Daytona Beach Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Roman CBI, which originated in 2007-08, will announce the full field and bracket following the conclusion of Sunday's (March 13) NCAA and NIT selection shows.

"We are very excited for the opportunity to play in the postseason," said Jones. "The CBI is a competitive tournament that will provide a tremendous challenge to our team."

The postseason bid marks the second for the Terriers in three years after the 2019-20 squad won the Patriot League tournament title and watched as the NCAA tournament was shut down along with the rest of the sports world by the CoVID-19 pandemic. Coincidentally, both that team and the 2022 Jacksonville Classic Jax Bracket champions earned 21 wins apiece.

BU raised the Jax Bracket trophy at the Jacksonville Classic back in November following notable wins over Northern Illinois (76-58) and Sam Houston State (72-59). Graduate student Javante McCoy was named tournament MVP and would go on to earn All-Patriot League First Team honors alongside classmate and 2022 PL Player of the Year Sukhmail Mathon. Seeking their second conference title, the duo helped BU rally late to force overtime at No. 2-seed Navy in the PL semifinals last Sunday before ultimately coming up just short, 85-80.

The Terriers last participated in the Roman CBI in 2010 and would advance all the way to the semifinals with victories against Oregon State (away) and Morehead State (home). That postseason experience proved beneficial the following year, as they punched their ticket to the NCAA tournament as America East champions for the first time in nine seasons.

Tickets for the Roman CBI can be accessed by clicking here and may also be purchased at the Ocean Center box office on game days. Special hotel rates are available at the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort.
