2022 Patriot League Golf Champions

Kuan Leads Terriers to Patriot League Title in Thrilling Finish

April 17, 2022

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore Flair Kuan calmly sank an 8-foot putt on the final hole of the Patriot League Championship, allowing Boston University to win the title by a single stroke while also clinching the individual title for herself. The Terriers edged Richmond, 928-929, over the course of three rounds at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course.

This is the third Patriot League championship for BU, which also won as a team in 2015 and 2019. The Terriers also won the America East Championship in 2006 and 2007. This year's title came in dramatic fashion, as a late seven-stroke lead quickly turned into a one-stroke deficit. Kuan was the hero, however, as her putt on 18 ensured that BU won its fifth conference tournament.

Kuan became the third Terrier to win the Patriot League individual trophy and earn Golfer of the Year honors, joining senior Hanako Kawasaki (2019) and Adela Cejnarova (2015, 2016, 2017). She finished four strokes clear of the second-place competitor thanks to a score of 224 (76-74-74).

Head Coach Bruce Chalas collected Patriot League Women's Golf Coach of the Year honors for the third time in his career. He has now earned conference coach of the year honors on four different occasions.

Freshman Christy Chen placed sixth with a 54-hole score of 235 (82-72-81) thanks to an even-par 72 in Saturday's second round. She joined Kawasaki on the All-Patriot League Second Team, as Kawasaki was seventh with a score of 236 (77-80-79). Kawasaki has earned All-Patriot League honors at all three conference championships in which she has competed.

Freshman Victoria Takai tied for 13th in her Patriot League Championship debut with a score of 241 (79-82-80) while junior Alice Fan shot a second-round 75 to finish tied for 15th at 242 (84-75-83). Junior Kristen Min Ju Kim placed 25th with a total of 246 (81-80-85).

The Terriers went wire-to-wire for their two previous Patriot League titles in 2015 and 2019 but had to come from behind this time around. BU was fourth after the first round and nine strokes back of then-leader Lehigh before entering the final round in second, one stroke behind Richmond.

BU will play in an NCAA Regional for the third time in program history. NCAA Regionals will be held from May 9-11 at six regional sites around the country. The Terriers will learn their regional destination during the 2022 NCAA DI Women's Golf Selection Show on April 27 at 4 p.m. ET on GOLF Channel.
