BOSTON – The Boston University men's, women's openweight, and women's lightweight rowing programs are prepared to compete at the 58th Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) this weekend. In total, the teams will have 13 crews featuring current student-athletes, and 21 total boats with BU representation, traverse the three-mile course along the Charles River from Oct. 20-22, with the Terriers' DeWolfe Boathouse once again serving as the official start line.
Since its inception in 1965, the Head of the Charles Regatta annually attracts more than 11,000 athletes competing in more than 2,000 boats to the banks of the Charles River. This year features 75 events, beginning with the Senior/Grand Veteran Singles on Friday (Oct. 20) at 7:45 a.m. For a map of where to watch along the course, click

MEN'S ROWING
The men's rowing program competes in the Head of the Charles after scrimmaging Dartmouth back on Oct. 7. Last year, BU took 10th place at the 2023 IRA National Championship Regatta, highlighted by the Second Varsity Eight's eighth-overall result. In 2022, the Terriers' Club 8+ crews placed seventh and 10th, the Championship 4+ was ninth, and the Championship 8+ earned 18th.
BU has five crews with student-athletes participating: a Club 4+ (Oct. 21 at 12:43 p.m.), two Club 8+ boats (Oct. 21 at 1:29 p.m.), Championship 4+ (Oct. 22 at 1:21 p.m.), and Championship 8+ (Oct. 22 at 1:57 p.m.)
"We are looking forward to racing this weekend in the Head of the Charles," said Bohrer. "It is fun to see the world of rowing descend upon Boston. We enjoy being host for some out-of-town programs and like to see alumni, family and friends coming back to DeWolfe. I feel like our team has made some very good changes in our technical rowing and they continue to develop a racing mindset. There is a real energy among the squad, and they are motivated to see how they stack up against other programs."
WOMEN'S ROWING
The women's rowing program scrimmaged Northeastern, Boston College, and Wellesley on Oct. 7 after the 2023 Head of the Housatonic was cancelled. The Terriers closed 2023 as the runner-up at the Patriot League Championships, tallying Grand Final victories in the Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4. Director of Women's Rowing
Malcolm Doldron took over the program in the summer of 2023.
BU operates four crews featuring student-athletes in this year's Head of the Charles: a Club 4+ (Oct. 21 at 1:04 p.m.), Club 8+ (Oct. 21 at 1:43 p.m.), Championship 4+ (Oct. 22 at 1:35 p.m.), and Championship 8+ (Oct. 22 at 2:32 p.m.). Last season, BU's Club 4+ captured the first bronze medal in the event in nine years.
"The Head of the Charles is the peak of the fall racing season, and we're ready to compete against some of the finest crews from across the nation and around the world," remarked Doldron. "Our team is truly thankful for the chance to race in this incredibly well-organized and highly regarded event. As always, we can't wait to welcome back our beloved alumni, friends, and family to the DeWolfe Boathouse."
LIGHTWEIGHT ROWING
The lightweight rowing program also participated in an exhibition with Northeastern, Boston College, and Wellesley on Oct. 7. In 2023, BU repeated as the runner-up at the IRA Championships, thanks to bronze medals in the Varsity 4 and Lightweight Double. The Terrier coaching staff was tabbed the CRCA National and Regional Coaching Staff of the Year. With Doldron's move, Mary Foster became the second head coach in program history last summer.
Four lightweight crews with student-athletes hit the water at the Head of the Charles: a pair in the Women's Championship Doubles (Oct. 21 at 2:21 p.m.), two Lightweight 4+ crews (Oct. 22 at 1:44 p.m.), and a Lightweight 8+ (Oct. 22 at 2:45 p.m.). Last year's Championship 8+ was third, with the top Championship 4+ taking sixth.
"The BU lightweights are very excited to be racing at the Head of the Charles this upcoming weekend," said Foster. "We are incredibly lucky to have such a great event take place on our home water so that we can welcome back alumni, friends and family to DeWolfe Boathouse."
