November 3, 2023

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After capturing its first Patriot League regular season title in nine years, the Boston University men's soccer team garnered a program-best four major year-end awards along with six total All-Conference honors, the league office announced Friday afternoon.

Both seniors Griffin Roach and Francesco Montali became the first Terriers in program history to retain a major award, as they were named Defensive Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year, respectively. Senior Eitan Rosen claimed Offensive Player of the Year recognition, while Kevin Nylen was tabbed Coach of the Year. Graduate student Colin Innes (first), graduate student Quinn Matulis (second) and senior Andrew Rent (third) joined Montali, Roach and Rosen in earning All-PL accolades for the second consecutive year.

In his fourth season at BU, Nylen earned his second major year-end award after being tabbed the 2017 Conference USA Coach of the Year while at Florida International. This fall, the Terriers (10-3-4, 7-1-1 PL) reached double-digit victories for the first time since 2015 and 26th overall time in program history. They currently rank in the top 100 nationally in 12 categories, including 27th in won-loss-tied percentage (.706), 33rd in team goals against average (.882), 34th in goal differential (12) and 82nd in RPI.

A native of Canton, Massachusetts, Roach anchored a backline that held opponents to just 9.2 shots per game, the program's lowest average since joining the PL in the summer of 2013. He also helped the Terriers hold teams to an average of 4.6 corners per game. On the offensive front, he headed in his first career game-winning goal in a 4-1 victory vs. Navy and keyed the 3-1 second-half come-from-behind win over Loyola Maryland with a 73rd minute header.

Montali recorded six shutouts this year, including five in conference play with clean sheets against Army West Point, Colgate, Holy Cross, Bucknell and Lehigh. The Davie, Florida, native posted a .800 save percentage in nine league games and finished the regular season 24th nationally in solo shutouts and 27th in goals against average (.800). He also claimed his first career assist with a long pass from inside his box toward midfield to set up a goal from sophomore Alex Bonnington.

BU's first PL Offensive Player of the Year since Major League Soccer star Dominique Badji ('14) was honored in 2014, Eitan Rosen posted a team-high 18 points off two assists and eight goals, the most by a Terrier since 2016. The Toronto, Ontario, native, was masterful in conference play with seven goals, highlighted by a brace at American, a three-point performance (1g,1a) against Navy and the game-winning goal at Bucknell.

Innes was also impressive in PL action, posting nine of his 11 points (2g,7a) against conference opponents. The Olathe, Kansas, native, currently owns the most assists by a Terrier since 2013. He played a part in all three goals against Holy Cross with two assists and later delivered a critical three-point performance against Loyola Maryland with an assist and game-winning goal off a free kick.

Matulis finished tied for fourth on the team at eight points with three goals and two assists. The Oak Park, California, native netted all three goals off impressive free kicks, including blasts at then-No. 23 New Hampshire and Boston College. He later assisted on goals against Holy Cross and Army West Point.

Rent secured his third overall All-PL award with a big three-point performance at Army West Pointin the regular season finale. The Gorham, Maine, native scored the game winner with a juke and hard shot at the far post before setting up the second goal from Bonnington. He also scored goals against Boston College and Navy while adding assists against Saint Joseph's and Northeastern.

Seeking their first PL tournament title, the Terriers will host a semifinal matchup on Tuesday (Nov. 7) with a 6 p.m. start against an opponent to be determined. BU last reached the NCAA tournament in 2015 via an at-large bid.
