Roach Named College Soccer News All-American

December 19, 2023

BOSTON – Adding to his impressive awards haul, Boston University men's soccer senior Griffin Roach has earned the program's first All-America honor in 17 years after being named a third team recipient by College Soccer News, the online publication announced Monday afternoon.

The Canton, Massachusetts, native was most recently tabbed the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year after repeating as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year back in November. The United Soccer Coaches organization honored Roach with his second consecutive Scholar All-America award along with an All-Region First Team accolade.

During the successful Patriot League championship campaign, Roach anchored a backline that held opponents to just 9.3 shots per game, the program's lowest average in the 21st century. On the other end of the field, he headed in his first career game-winning goal in a 4-1 victory vs. Navy and keyed the 3-1 second-half come-from-behind win over Loyola Maryland with a 73rd minute header that helped propel the Terriers (12-4-4, 7-1-1 PL) to their first PL regular season title since 2014.

In the PL tournament, Roach helped hold Colgate and Lafayette to just one combined shot on goal en route to a pair of shutouts and the program's first conference championship since 2008. He was one of four Terriers named to the All-Tournament team for his efforts, as BU finished the year unbeaten at home (8-0-2) for the first time since 1994.

Led by PL Coach of the Year Kevin Nylen, BU ended its 75th season ranked 28th nationally in goals against average (.900), 30th in shutout percentage (.400) and 35th in goal differential (13). Roach was the first Terrier to earn All-America honors since Zach Kirby ('07) was placed on the third team in 2006 by College Soccer News.

Several other Terriers were recognized for their efforts this past fall with senior Francesco Montali repeating as the PL Goalkeeper of the Year, senior Eitan Rosen claiming PL Offensive Player of the Year accolades and graduate student Quinn Matulis adding PL Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. Both Montali (#98) and graduate student Colin Innes (#89) earned a spot in TopDrawerSoccer.com's year-end Top 100 player rankings as well.
