Holy Cross Spoils Zink's Career Night, 82-70

BOSTON – Despite senior Nevin Zink posting a career-high 25 points and graduate student Walter Whyte earning a double-double, the Boston University men's basketball team fell to Holy Cross, 82-70, on Wednesday night at Case Gym.

The Crusaders (8-16, 5-6 PL) finished with a 13-3 advantage in made 3-pointers to hand the Terriers (10-14, 3-8 PL) their third straight defeat. Holy Cross also captured a point in the Turnpike Trophy all-sports competition to cut BU's lead to 5-4 by shooting 54.7 percent from the field and overcoming 11 Terrier steals.

Zink went 9-of-13 from the field and 7-of-9 at the charity stripe, while Whyte posted 13 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Graduate student Jonas Harper tallied 14 points and added a career-high five steals alongside three assists to help the Terriers have an opportunity to cut a 21-point deficit to three with with 3:40 remaining in regulation.

Air Force transfer Will Batchelder led the Crusader attack by shooting 7-of-10 from behind the arc en route to a game-high 27 points. Will Batchelder was a perfect 5-of-5 in 3-point territory on his way to 21 points, while Gerrale Gates had 17 points and team-high seven rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Batchelder opened the game with a 3-pointer to give the Crusaders the lead for good, as they jumped out to an 11-4 advantage on Octave's trey at 16:06.
  • The Terriers scored five straight on back-to-back layups and a free throw, but Batchelder came right back with another 3-pointer.
  • Owning a 16-14 lead with 11:24 remaining in the half, Octave scored from behind the arc to key an 8-0 spurt and later added a layup at 2:01to grab a commanding 45-25 lead.
  • Caleb Kenney extended it to 50-29 at 17:10 in the second half on a layup set up by Octave's steal.
  • The Terriers though did not give in and clawed their way back to single-digits, 56-47, at 8:47 on Zink's free throw. 
  • Zink scored on consecutive possessions to keep the deficit to nine, 70-61, with 5:10 remaining.
  • After Harper added a 3-pointer, BU missed a 1-and-1, an open 3-point attempt and lastly a layup at 3:43, which led to Octave ending the rally on his fifth bucket from behind the arc.
  • HC seald the win with five free throws during the final 70 seconds.
GAME NOTES
  • Zink topped his previous high of 21 points scored during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons at USC Upstate. His season high before the game was 14 tallied at New Hampshire back in November.
  • With his fourth double-double of the season and 18th overall, Whyte moved up to No. 8 all-time at BU in points (1,563) and sixth in rebounds (780).
  • After being presented with a commemorative 1,000-point ball in a pregame ceremony, Harper moved up to No. 5 in career 3-pointers (203) and No. 34 in points (1,038).
  • Seeing his first action after missing the last three contests due to a non-COVID related illness, junior Daman Tate scored eight points off the bench.
  • No. 3 leading scorer and senior Ethan Brittain-Watts (9.0 ppg) missed the game due to a concussion suffered at Lehigh on Sunday.
  • BU outscored HC in the paint, 46-28, and in bench production, 12-4, but was outscored in both turnovers (12-10) and fast break opportunities (8-5).
  • The Crusaders extended their lead in the all-time series to 59-27 by avenging last year's 78-65 home defeat.

  • BU will next visit Loyola Maryland on Saturday (Feb. 4) at 5 p.m.
  • The Terriers will be seeking the sweep against the Greyhounds after winning the previous matchup, 66-53, back on Jan. 21.
