Bone Celebrates Senior Day with First Career Brace in 2-2 Draw against American

BOSTON – Led by graduate student Aidan Bone's first career brace, the Boston University men's soccer team overcame two deficits to rally for a 2-2 draw against American Saturday afternoon in its home regular season finale.

By extending their unbeaten streak at Nickerson Field against Patriot League opponents to 21 games (14-0-7), the Terriers (3-3-9, 3-1-3 PL) have tied an NCAA record with nine draws on the season. BU also extended its unbeaten streak in the series with the Eagles (4-5-6, 3-2-2 PL) to seven contests (5-0-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Graduate student Andrew Wike earned his first save in the 11th minute by stopping a low grounder from Troy Elgersma.
  • The Eagles jumped on the scoreboard first at 18:18 by earning a free kick near a corner flag and getting a lucky break with the cross bouncing off a BU defender into the back of the net.
  • The Terriers responded in the 32nd minute with Bone finishing a service pass from junior Quin DeLaMater that was set up by senior Andrew Soczynski.
  • Matthew Tibbetts kept the game tied entering the locker room by stopping shot attempts from both DeLaMater and junior Ryan Lau over the next six minutes of action.
  • After the teams combined for three unsuccessful corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Eagles retook the lead at 57:29 with Ethan Boyle ripping a shot past Wike on a forward pass from Dilane Zouantcha.
  • The Eagles went down a man after Nicholas Shirley received a red card at 62:31 for preventing a counter by the Terriers with a hard foul outside AU's box.
  • Tibbetts then made a diving save on DeLaMater's free kick with BU receiving an offsides call after pouncing on the rebound.
  • BU dominated possession for the rest of the game with junior Diego Rived nailing the post at 72:10 and later the crossbar at 82:21.
  • Tibbetts added four more saves to maintain the 2-1 advantage during that stretch, but BU was able to net the equalizer at 87:48.
  • Junior Alex Bonnington managed to head a cross in the box to Rived, who tapped it over to Bone for a point-blank shot 2-2 tie.
  • Senior Andrew Rent helped the Terriers clear AU's corner kick in the 89th minute and sent the game's last shot attempt wide at 89:12.
GAME NOTES
  • Bone became the second Terrier to record a brace after sophomore Andrea Di Blasio accomplished the feat against Army West Point back in September. Both men are now tied for the team lead at four goals apiece.
  • Both DeLaMater and Rived moved into a tie for first on the team with three assists each.
  • Bonnington became the 12th Terrier to record an assist this fall and 15th overall to earn at least one point.
  • The Terriers posted a season-high 19 shots and allowed a season-low three attempts while finishing with a 5-3 advantage in corners.
  • BU is now 6-3-3 all-time in the series against AU.
  • The Terriers are the seventh NCAA Division I team to record nine draws in a season with both Navy and Fordham the last programs to reach the mark in 2022.
UP NEXT
  • BU will hit the road for the final two games of the regular season, starting with a trip to Navy on Friday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m.
  • The Terriers are riding a five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2)in the series following last year's 4-1 home victory.
  • Overall, BU is 1-2-1 on the road after the teams battled to a 1-1 draw in Annapolis, Maryland, two years ago.
