Terrier Twelve - #10: Women’s Basketball Returns To PL Championship Game

July 2, 2024

Returning for a 16th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. In 2023-24, over half of BU's teams either won a conference title or finished runner-up at their league championship, and all of those programs will be represented in the countdown. Check back each Tuesday and Friday this summer as we unveil this year's Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com.

Checking in at No. 10 in this year's Terrier Twelve is the BU women's basketball program, highlighted with its second straight appearance in the Patriot League championship game and third in four years.

Beginning with a thrilling buzzer-beater in the season opener against in-state rival UMass Lowell on Nov. 6, 2023, BU recorded its most non-conference victories since becoming a Patriot League member in 2013, winning eight of its 11 out-of-conference matchups.

This included an 80-77 triumph over Harvard on Dec. 9, the only win for a Patriot League team against a foe ranked in the top 100 in NET all year, and an 83-80 overtime victory at Northeastern where sophomore Anastasiia Semenova nailed a three-pointer with 1.3 seconds on the clock. In addition, the Terriers battled No. 7 Colorado through three quarters, at one point leading in the frame.

BU went on to record 10 wins in Patriot League play, tying for second-most in the conference and marking six-consecutive seasons with double-digit league victories. After defeating Army West Point in the Patriot League quarterfinal round, the third-consecutive year BU has defeated the Black Knights in the postseason, the Terriers defeated second-ranked Colgate 52-40 in the semifinals, avenging its loss from eight days prior to advance to the Patriot League Championship game against top-seeded Holy Cross.

Though the Crusaders went on to win the title game, BU enjoyed another historic campaign. BU set program record with 15 home wins at Case Gym. Its 158 blocks also set a new single-season benchmark, eclipsing the 2012-13 team. Overall, the Terriers won 20 games for a second consecutive year, doing so for the first time in 11 years.

Senior Caitlin Weimar was a catalyst for the Terriers, leading the team with 18.7 points per game, 10.6 rebounds per game, and 88 blocks. The only Division I student-athlete to finish the year with more than 18.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game, Weimar became the program's first-ever Patriot League Player of the Year and ECAC Division I Player of the Year. She was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year for a second-straight year, the first Terrier to achieve that distinction.

Joining Weimar on the First Team All-Patriot League was junior Alex Giannaros, who set career-highs last season with 14.2 points per game and 72 three-pointers. Giannaros, a Brockton native, is the program's all-time leader with a .440 three-point percentage, having drained 162 triples in three seasons.
