August 15, 2024 | Men's Soccer
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – With one week remaining before the start of the regular season, the defending Patriot League champion Boston University men's soccer team had two Terriers named to the conference's Preseason All-PL squad, the league office announced Thursday morning.
Both senior forward Andrew Rent and junior defender Quin DeLaMater earned the recognition, while BU collected eight first-place votes to place second overall in the preseason poll despite the graduation of four PL major year-end award winners.
Loyola Maryland received 150 points and 12 first-place votes to edge the Terriers' 142 points for the top spot in the poll. American (135), Colgate (103) and Lafayette (98) rounded out the top five. Navy (81), Army West Point (60), Holy Cross (51), Bucknell (40) and Lehigh (40) completed the preseason poll as determined by the coaches and sports information directors.
Last year, BU went 12-4-4 overall and 7-1-1 in conference play to claim its first regular season title since 2014. During the PL tournament, the top-seeded Terriers shut out both Colgate and Lafayette to hoist a trophy for the first time in 16 years while also extending its active home unbeaten streak to 14 contests (11-0-3).
Rent is the top returning points tabulator for the Terriers with 10 total off three goals and four assists. A recipient of All-PL Third Team honors, he helped BU clinch the regular season title with a goal and assist in the team's 2-0 victory at Army. He later assisted on the second-half game winner in the 1-0 win over Lafayette in the title game.
DeLaMater was one of the key contributors in the backline, helping BU collect eight shutouts and finish 28th nationally in team goals against average at .900. The Terriers earned clean sheets against Saint Joseph's, Lehigh, Holy Cross, Colgate (2x), Bucknell, Army and Lafayette while holding opponents to just 9.3 shots per game.
The Terriers will open their 76th season at home on Thursday, Aug. 22, with a 4 p.m. start time against No. 9 New Hampshire.
