Terriers Take Down Providence, 4-1

BOSTON – The Boston University women's ice hockey team (3-10-0, 3-5-0 HE) defeated Providence (4-10-1, 2-4-1 HE) in a 4-1 decision on Friday evening at Walter Brown Arena.
Providence got on the board first before BU responded with a pair of goals before the close of the opening stanza. The score remained unchanged through the second period, but BU secured its victory in the third when it tacked on two goals in the final four minutes to defeat the Friars, 4-1.
Seniors Lilli Welcke, Clara Yuhn and Riley Walsh and sophomore Kaileigh Quigg found the back of the net. Seniors Maeve Kelly, Walsh and Luisa Welcke, sophomores Tessa Demain and Keira Healey and freshman Avery Supryka all registered one assist. Junior Mari Pietersen made 34 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams skated evenly to start the first period with few breaks in the action.
- At 13:07, Providence opened the scoring with a breakaway goal.
- The Terriers responded at 12:03 when Li. Welcke's shot from the point found the back of the net to even the score, 1-1. She was assisted by Lu. Welcke and Demain.
- A little over two minutes later, Yuhn intercepted a Providence pass to charge down the slot and score, giving BU a 2-1 lead.
- The Terriers went on the power play at 15:01 but the score remained unchanged by the end of the first frame.
- At 4:03 in the second, BU went to the box for tripping.
- BU added another to the box with nine seconds remaining on the penalty kill, this time for boarding.
- The Terriers were successful on both penalty kills and held onto its 2-1 lead through the frame.
- BU went to the box at 1:16 in the third for slashing and was once again successful on the kill.
- At the 11:59 mark, the Terriers were called for too many skaters on the ice and successfully killed the penalty.
- BU kept the puck in the Friars' zone with passes from Walsh and Kelly finding Quigg, whose net-front shot gave BU a 3-1 lead.
- Providence pulled its netminder with 3:43 to play.
- The Terriers capitalized on the empty net when Supryka and K. Healey set up Walsh, who scored on the empty net with a shot from the blue line to help BU win, 4-1.
GAME NOTES
- BU narrowly outshot Providence, 37 to 35.
- BU was 0-for-1 on the power play while Providence was 0-for-4.
- The Friars won 28 faceoffs compared to BU's 15.
- BU blocked nine shots while Providence blocked 10.
- K. Healey led BU in blocked shots with three.
- Providence netminder Hope Walinski made 33 saves in net.
