Malleck Earns Automatic Qualification to NCAA Indoor Mile Final

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Graduate student Foster Malleck, the lone representative for the Boston University men's track & field program at the NCAA Indoor Championships, earned automatic qualification to the mile final after finishing fourth in his heat in the mile preliminaries on day one of the meet at the Virginia Beach Sports Center on Friday.
Malleck ran a 3:57.36 to earn his spot in the final, finishing not only fourth in his heat, but fourth in the preliminary round as a whole.
The Kitchener, Ontario native closed the final 800m in 1:53.26 after opening up in 2:04.13. He moved from sixth to fourth over those final 800 meters, with plenty of position changes during that span.
He will look to win the NCAA mile final and become BU's first men's NCAA Indoor champion since Nick Saunders won the high jump in 1984. The last miler who ran at the NCAA Indoor Championships was Rich Peters in 2014, who finished fourth in 4:03.49 and earned first team All-America honors. He was the last first team All-American for BU.
Malleck's race begins at 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
