Malleck Ends Collegiate Career with Third-Place Mile Finish at NCAA Indoor Championships

March 15, 2025

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Graduate student Foster Malleck closed out his NCAA track & field career with a third-place finish in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

Malleck crossed the finish line in 3:54.42 and had the best finishing place by a Terrier since Rich Peters finished second in the mile in 2012. Malleck had to close out the final 800m in 1:54.60 to earn third in a race where he stayed toward the back of the pack for the majority of it.

Malleck also picked up First Team All-America honors, marking the first time since Peters in 2014 that a Terrier has earned the award. He is the 18th indoor First Team All-American in BU history. Malleck and Peters are the only two first teamers BU has had this century.

The Kitchener, Ontario native's time of 3:54.42 is the fastest time by a BU athlete in the final of the NCAA Indoor Championships mile and it is the only time a Terrier has gone under four minutes in the indoor mile final at this meet.

On day one, Malleck had an impressive automatic qualification performance, finishing in 3:57.36 and taking fourth in his heat to earn a spot in the final.

Malleck caps an impressive indoor season and career as a Terrier as a six-time Patriot League track & field champion, the 2025 Patriot-League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, a 10-time All-Patriot League selection and now an NCAA Indoor Track & Field third-place finisher.

He will turn around and head to Nanjing, China for the 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships, running for Team Canada beginning March 21.
